On the evening of May 25, Ms. Pham Khanh Phong Lan, Head of the Food Safety Management Board of Ho Chi Minh City, said that 15 samples including bread and pork sausage taken from leftover food of patients and production facilities were all negative, no C. botulinum bacteria were detected. It is currently impossible to confirm the source of botulinum poisoning in the recent patients.
According to Ms. Pham Khanh Phong Lan, at the time of recording 3 children in Thu Duc City infected with botulinum, this unit only had the clue that the children had eaten bread with pork roll. From there, they found the man selling the bread with pork roll.
This person said he bought the pork roll from a female street vendor. A few days later, the authorities found the woman and had information about the pork roll production facility in Thu Duc City.
During the inspection, the authorities determined that the facility was operating without a license and requested that it be shut down. At the same time, samples of pork roll from the facility and leftover food from patients were taken for testing.
“Previously, common food poisoning was bacteria like E.coli... causing digestive disorders, diarrhea, abdominal pain. Botulinum toxin is more dangerous and its source is still unknown. Therefore, the most important thing right now is for hospitals to have antidotes ready so that when there is botulinum poisoning, emergency medicine will be available immediately,” Ms. Pham Khanh Phong Lan informed.
