Russia announces control of more villages in northern Ukraine

Russia takes control of more villages in the north

In the Kupiansk region, where Ukraine is intensifying its attacks, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had taken control of the village of Novoselivske, according to TASS.

The Russian military added that "the counter-offensive operations carried out by Ukraine... have improved the situation" of Russian forces.

Earlier, Ukrainian military spokesman Ganna Malyar confirmed on August 4 that forces in the east had to face increasingly frequent attacks by Russian troops.

On Telegram, Ms. Malyar said that fierce fighting had broken out between the two front lines, and that the Russians were trying to draw Ukrainian resources to the area, while the Kyiv army was focusing on counterattacks in the south.

In the east, Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar admitted that "extremely fierce fighting is going on" in the city of Bakhmut (Donetsk). Ukrainian forces are advancing "slowly but surely" in the southern part of the city, while controlling strongholds in the north.

For its part, the Russian military only said that Ukrainian units had failed in their advances in Donetsk and Krasny Liman.

On the same day, Major General Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defense, announced that within 24 hours, Russian air defense forces intercepted 8 rockets of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and 22 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of Ukraine in Kharkiv, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

According to Mr. Konashenkov, since the beginning of the campaign, Ukraine has lost a total of 458 aircraft, 245 helicopters, 5,518 UAVs, 428 air defense missile systems, 11,130 tanks, 1,142 multiple launch missile systems and other weapons/equipment.

Russian oil tanker attacked

On August 5, Kremlin officials confirmed that a Russian oil tanker was attacked by a Ukrainian suicide unmanned surface vehicle (USV) near the strategic bridge across the Kerch Strait, connecting the Crimean peninsula and mainland Russia.

On Telegram, the Russian Federal Agency for Sea and River Transport said the tanker, named SIG, had a hole "near the waterline on the starboard side, believed to be the result of an attack by a USV". There were no casualties among the sailors on board.

As usual, the Kyiv government did not claim responsibility for the incident. However, NBC News quoted a source from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) as saying that the agency attacked the Russian tanker in a joint operation with the Ukrainian Navy. The USV carried 450 kg of explosives and successfully rammed the tanker after midnight on August 4 and into the early morning of August 5.

Ukraine in recent weeks is said to be stepping up the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to carry out attacks deep into Russian territory, including Moscow.

However, what has just happened shows that the new generation of USVs could open up a new front between Russia and Ukraine following 18 months of fighting.

USVs are fast, hard to detect, and can travel hundreds of kilometers to their target. Until now, the amount of explosives installed on the ship allowed USVs to penetrate the side of large ships like SIG.

Saudi Arabia launches Ukraine peace talks

On August 5, peace talks on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's peace proposal opened in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), according to Reuters.

Expected to last until August 6, the peace talks bring together senior officials from about 40 countries, excluding Russia, to discuss the possibility of implementing Ukraine's peace plan.

China, which did not attend the previous round of dialogue in Copenhagen, Denmark in July, confirmed sending Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui to Jeddah.

India's National Security Advisor Shri Ajit Doval also attended. Like China, India maintains close ties with Russia and has been increasing its imports of Russian oil since Moscow launched a special military operation in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin said it would monitor the situation at the meeting in Saudi Arabia.
