Exploitation output decreased sharply by 70 - 80% compared to the same period, the price of sea shrimp in Da Nang city increased sharply by more than 200% compared to the same period last year.
Crop failure, fishermen and traders "cry"
It is the peak season of sea shrimp (shrimp), every year at this time, every day, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bon (Tho Quang ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang city) - a wholesaler specializing in providing shrimp to traders in many markets in Da Nang, imports and consumes tons of goods, at peak times up to 2 tons a day, buying and selling continuously.
Due to poor harvest, high shrimp prices, and sparse trading at Man Thai market. |
But this year, Mrs. Bon is often in a state of fidgeting, waiting to see if any fishermen's boats come ashore and try to buy shrimp to sell wholesale to their customers. "Every year, buying and selling is very busy, but this year there is no shrimp harvest, I have been waiting since 4am until now, even though I have traditional customers, the output is still not enough to sell, the price has increased very high" , Mrs. Bon said.
Small traders and wholesalers compete for baskets of shrimp at dawn. |
At 5:30 a.m. on March 1, at Man Thai beach and Man Thai seafood market (a temporary market, only open from 4-6 a.m. every day, where all kinds of seafood caught near the shore are sold in wholesale), there were quite a few people. There were more buyers than sellers. Every time a shrimp fishing boat of fishermen came ashore, the wholesalers and small traders fought to buy the goods.
Making a living from dawn |
Fisherman Nguyen Van Ba (Tho Quang ward, Son Tra district) has been fishing for sea shrimp for decades. Just brought his boat to shore, still wet from soaking in the water since early morning, Mr. Ba said that the peak season for catching sea shrimp is about half a month after Tet. In previous years, when the season came, fishermen would go out to sea, their boats full of shrimp, and their income was stable. But this year, all the trips were unsuccessful, and they had to return empty-handed. Not to mention that many people went further to fish; then the cost of fuel, boat maintenance, and living expenses became even heavier. “Last year, at the peak of the fishing season, I caught hundreds of kilograms of shrimp every day. On a good day, after deducting expenses, I still earned millions of dong. This year, the harvest was completely bad. Only on days when there was a lot of shrimp…, not enough to sell to customers, let alone retail. Although the price of shrimp has increased sharply, it still cannot compensate for the output, ” Mr. Ba informed.
Retailer Le Thi Tam takes the opportunity to pick out the remaining stones in the shrimp before bringing them to the retail market. |
While picking out the remaining stones in the basket of shrimp before bringing it to Thanh Khe market (Thanh Khe district, Da Nang city) for retail sale, trader Le Thi Tam (residing in Man Thai ward, Son Tra district) said that this more than 40kg of shrimp was the result of her standing guard since dawn and fighting to buy it. “The purchase price is more than twice as high as last year but there is nothing to buy, the wholesale price fluctuates from 60,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, sometimes even higher. High prices are difficult to sell but the job requires acceptance. If the market is closed, there is no income,” Ms. Tam shared.

Shrimp prices increased dramatically by more than 200%
According to Ms. Tam, the high import price of shrimp has led to an increase in the retail price after deducting various costs. The high retail price, Ms. Tam said, has also led to a “half-crying, half-laughing” situation when people thought that the traders were shouting at them so they offered lower prices. “The high import price, along with the transportation cost, other costs such as seating at the market, etc., has also led to a high retail price. Many buyers thought we were “ripping them off”, some even offered 10,000 VND for 200 grams of shrimp, much lower than the import price,” Ms. Tam shared with a laugh.
The retail price of sea shrimp at markets in Da Nang city ranges from 100,000 - 110,000 VND/kg, an increase of more than 200% over the same period last year. |
At some traditional markets in Da Nang, the number of shrimp vendors has decreased sharply compared to previous years.
The retail price of sea shrimp recorded at markets on the morning of March 1 was from 100,000 - 110,000 VND/kg, an increase of more than 200% compared to the same period last year.
Low production so despite high prices, shrimp purchasing power is still very good |
At Hoa Khanh market (Lien Chieu district), there are only a few small traders selling fresh shrimp, and the amount of shrimp sold has also decreased sharply.
Trader Nguyen Thi Tuyet (Hoa Khanh market, Lien Chieu district) was given 30kg of shrimp by a wholesaler, and from nearly 7am to nearly 9am, she almost sold out. "The weather is sunny, so people's demand for fresh shrimp to cook soup has also increased, so I can sell very quickly. The price of shrimp is high, so instead of buying 2-3 taels, most people only buy about 1-2 taels," Ms. Tuyet informed, adding that due to the lack of shrimp, she imported some other types of seafood (in small quantities) such as clams to sell with the hope of earning more income.
Sea shrimp, also known as sea shrimp, is very popular with people in the Central region. |
“Fresh shrimp makes a sweet soup, so almost every year when the season comes, my family often buys some to make soup. This year there are few shrimps and the price is high, so I only buy 15,000 VND (about 1.5 ounces) each time to cook for lunch,” said Ms. Le Thi Thu Cuc (Hoa Khanh Bac ward, Lien Chieu district).
Although it is the peak season for catching shrimp, the output of sea shrimp in Da Nang City has decreased by about 70 - 80% compared to the same period last year. Retail shrimp prices at traditional markets have increased dramatically, ranging from 100,000 - 110,000 VND/kg, more than double the same period last year. |
