There are many concerns regarding the impact of social media on young people.

In his report, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy highlighted the consequences that social media can have on the brain development of young children. Through research, scientists believe that the lack of security affects children and adolescents. Murthy said: "Virtually all adolescents in the US use social media, and at this time, we do not have enough evidence to conclude that this experience is safe for them, especially at a vulnerable stage of brain development emotionally and socially."

Murthy believes that excessive use of social media at this young age can lead to many problems such as behavior, eating, depression, damaged self-image, poor memory and difficulty concentrating.

The report states that 46% of surveyed teens aged 13 to 17 said they felt bad about themselves because of social media. The issues listed above can have serious consequences, leading to suicide in the most severe cases.

Regardless, the US Surgeon General says that doesn’t mean social media should be eliminated. For them, Snapchat, TikTok or Twitter can also bring certain benefits to children’s development such as creating a space for personal expression, the ability to create and maintain online friendships, discussions of similar interests, etc.
