According to global airport data released yesterday, April 14th, by the International Airport Council (ACI), there were approximately 9.5 billion passengers worldwide last year, a 3.8% increase compared to 2019 and a 9% increase compared to 2023. ACI represents the interests of 2,181 airports in 170 countries.
The world's busiest airport is once again Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, USA. Home to Delta Air Lines, it held the number one spot for 26 years (out of 27 years the ranking has been in place), dropping once in 2020 due to a decline in passenger numbers.

Dubai International Airport became the world's second busiest airport for the first time in 2023 and has maintained that position in the latest top 10 rankings.
In third place, passenger traffic at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport surged 17% in 2024 compared to 2019 levels and increased by over 7% compared to 2023. Tokyo Haneda and London Heathrow, airports that consistently rank in the top 10, came in at fourth and fifth place, respectively.
At number 6, Denver International Airport is an example of high passenger volume at US hubs, with an increase of over 19% compared to 2019 passenger levels and nearly 6% compared to 2023.
Airports in Istanbul, Türkiye, and New Delhi, India, ranked 7th and 9th, respectively. At 8th place, passenger traffic at Chicago O'Hare International Airport remained down approximately 5% from 2019 levels (though it is up about 8% from 2023).
And topping the 2024 rankings is Shanghai Pudong International Airport, which saw the biggest leap in the rankings, from 21st place in 2023 to 10th, with a massive 41% increase in traffic.
According to ACI World, the airport's significant leap forward is due to "expanded visa policies, the resumption and expansion of international flights, operational improvements, and the recovery of the Asia- Pacific region, particularly China."
ACI believes that economic instability, geopolitical tensions, production delays from aircraft manufacturers, and other tensions are among the challenges the industry will face in 2024. But ACI's outlook remains positive.
Geopolitical and economic uncertainties still lie ahead, and ACI anticipates these issues will have some impact on air travel. The extent of this impact, on areas such as airline capacity or passenger demand, remains unknown.
"Clearly, if the uncertainty over tariffs and things continue… that could impact the growth we are forecasting right now," an ACI representative said in an interview last week before President Donald Trump paused the latest round of US tariffs.
