In order to implement the training plan with flight formations, ready for the 50th anniversary of national reunification, the Air Defense - Air Force Service has developed a plan to select pilots and flight crews from three main units such as Regiment 916 (Division 371), Regiment 917 (Division 370) and Regiment 930 (Division 372).
In the photo, more than 10 modern helicopters such as Mi-8, Mi-171, Mi-17 (including reserve helicopters) are carefully checked by the technical team, ensuring they are ready to take off at Bien Hoa airport (Dong Nai).
From early morning, hundreds of officers and soldiers, especially the pilots of 3 helicopter regiments, were ready for the training session.
Senior Lieutenant Trieu Phuc Toan, Deputy Technical Squadron Leader of Regiment 917, said that checking and maintaining helicopters before and after each flight is a mandatory requirement to ensure absolute safety. Technicians must check every detail, from the engine, propellers to the electrical and fuel systems.
“We have to wake up at 3am to check all the flight preparation stages, ensure no incidents occur while the helicopter is in operation and thoroughly fix any damage on the ground,” Senior Lieutenant Toan shared.
At 7am, the flight crews quickly received orders and did a final check before the helicopters rolled onto the runway. Under the direction of the flight commander, each helicopter roared, its propellers accelerated, and then took off one by one, creating an impressive scene.
Then, 10 helicopters coordinated in a 3-4-3 formation, demonstrating precision and synchronization in each flying technique. The squadrons performed formation demonstrations at different altitudes, practicing coordination between flight crews and handling situations in the air.
In the cockpit, the pilot concentrates, controlling the steering wheel to keep the formation stable. The commander continuously transmits orders via radio, ensuring accuracy down to the second.
Lieutenant Colonel Le Duy Cuong, pilot and navigator of Regiment 917, said he was flying the helicopter in position 2 in group 3 of the flight formation. Flying in formation not only requires individual skills but also requires close coordination between flight crews.
“We have carefully studied the flight plan and terrain at Bien Hoa airport and the Ho Chi Minh City area to ensure safety and complete the assigned tasks well,” Lieutenant Colonel Cuong shared.
After an hour of training, the helicopter formation landed one by one, ending the training session. On the ground, technicians approached each aircraft, checking the technical condition after each flight.
Not only helicopters, other air force units with Su-30MK2 and Yak-130 fighter jets are also practicing at Bien Hoa airport. It is expected that the flight formations will conduct a general rehearsal in mid-April before participating in the official performance at the 50th anniversary of National Reunification Day on the morning of April 30 in Ho Chi Minh City.
