Man City put Gundogan out of contract

With his name on the list of expiring contracts, captain Ilkay Gundogan could leave Man City at the end of this month.

On June 16, Man City announced a list of four players whose contracts were due to expire. Gundogan's name appeared alongside two young players Terrell Agyemang and Rowan McDonald, as well as Benjamin Mendy, who is facing a retrial on one charge of rape and another of sexual assault.

According to the Daily Mail , being on the list of out-of-contract players does not mean that Gundogan cannot play for Man City next season. The German captain can still sign a new contract and stay. But appearing on the list also means that Gundogan may be looking for a new club.

On June 10, after the Champions League final, Gundogan said he had not decided on his future. According to the Daily Mail , Man City only offered a new one-year contract with an option to extend for another year.

Meanwhile, Arsenal and Barca are both ready to offer longer contracts. The Sun reports that Barca have drawn up a three-year contract to invite Gundogan. The La Liga champions have also asked Gundogan to respond by June 20 whether he will leave Man City or not. If Gundogan leaves Man City, the possibility of him choosing Barca is higher. The 32-year-old midfielder does not want to go to Arsenal and face the team that just won the treble with him.

Gundogan joined Man City in 2016. He was coach Pep Guardiola's first signing at the Etihad Stadium. During his seven years at Man City, he won five Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, four League Cups, two Community Shields and a Champions League. Gundogan ended the 2022-23 season with important goals against Liverpool, Leeds, Everton and a double against Man Utd in the FA Cup final.

Gundogan is currently with the German national team in a series of friendly matches in mid-June. On the evening of June 16, the 32-year-old midfielder sat out the 0-1 loss to Poland. He could be available for the match against Colombia on June 20.

Germany did not have to play in the qualifying rounds for Euro 2024. They went straight to the finals as hosts. The tournament will take place from June 14 to July 14 next year, in 10 cities.
