According to TechSpot , Cloudflare's annual report highlighted important changes in global internet traffic in 2024. Accordingly, the 17.2% growth reflects the trend of increasing internet usage around the world. The growth mainly occurred from mid-August and accelerated significantly in late November. Periods of service disruption are also clearly noted in the data chart.
Internet traffic to surge by end of 2024 thanks to festive season, digital content consumption, expanding connectivity and popularity of new technologies and platforms
One notable point in the report is that mobile internet is increasingly becoming the primary access channel. More than 40% of global internet traffic now originates from mobile devices, marking a dramatic shift from 15 years ago.
In terms of operating systems, more than two-thirds of mobile traffic comes from Android devices. Android accounts for more than 90% of traffic in more than 25 countries and regions, and is especially popular in Papua New Guinea and Bangladesh, where per capita incomes are lower. In contrast, in developed countries like Denmark, iOS dominates with 66% of mobile traffic.
Google continues to be the world's most popular internet service provider thanks to its diverse product portfolio and leadership in many areas. Facebook, Apple, TikTok and Amazon follow Google in the list of top service providers.
The report also showed the remarkable growth of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service. Starlink traffic has nearly tripled over the past year. In the US, it has increased more than 2.5 times, while in Brazil, it has increased more than 17 times. SpaceX currently leads the satellite internet market, although it is expected to face significant competition from rivals such as Amazon in the future.
Cloudflare's report confirms the continuous development of the global internet, especially in the context of the continued increase in demand for internet use. This is a positive signal for service providers, and at the same time, requires upgrading infrastructure to meet the growing needs of users.
