In the winter crop of 2023, Loc Ha district (Ha Tinh) plans to produce nearly 473 hectares of land for growing vegetables and other crops. To date, the locality has completed about 80% of the area and is rushing to complete it in the coming time.

In the days after the heavy rain, Mr. Nguyen Van Khoan in Xuan Hai residential group (Loc Ha town) urgently went to Dong Eo to replant 3 sao of yellow-fleshed sweet potatoes (Japanese sweet potatoes) that had been planted 10 days ago and had their beds washed away by the rain. Mr. Khoan also increased his labor intensity to have fresh, spongy topsoil in time to plant 1-2 batches of sprouted cabbage intercropped with potatoes to earn extra daily income. This farmer also planned to intercrop corn with potatoes after finishing sprouted cabbage (about 1 month from now) to have an additional source of food for livestock and poultry.

Mr. Nguyen Van Khoan re-cultivated the potato beds that were eroded by heavy rain to continue planting sprouted cabbage.

Mr. Nguyen Van Khoan calculated: “Each sao of sweet potato intercropped with vegetables and corn costs about 5 million VND to produce, including plowing, harrowing, fertilizer, seeds... If all goes well, after about 4 months, we will harvest 6-7 quintals of tubers, worth about 8.5 million VND; adding the cost of sprouts and corn, the total harvest is nearly 10 million VND, with a profit of nearly 5 million VND. In addition, there are also sweet potato tops, corn cobs, corn leaves... to serve livestock farming during periods of food scarcity”.

Currently, people are focusing on overcoming difficulties to plant seeds (about 76% of the area has been reached) and will try to complete the plan as soon as possible".

Along with the town, farmers in localities throughout the district are also overcoming difficulties, quickly covering the winter crop area according to the crop calendar. Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Thinh Loc Commune Nguyen Van Thanh said: "This crop, the whole commune strives to complete 170 hectares of various crops, including 85 hectares of sweet potatoes, 80 hectares of vegetables and 5 hectares of corn.
