In early November, people in Doan Hung district are busy harvesting the laden bunches of specialty grapefruit, bringing high economic value.

Doan Hung grapefruit was formerly known as Phu Doan grapefruit with 2 famous specialty grapefruit varieties that produce the most beautiful fruit and delicious flavor: Suu Chi Dam grapefruit and Bang Luan grapefruit. When ripe, the grapefruit will have a bright yellow color, when eaten, it is very juicy with a sweet and refreshing taste.

Doan Hung specialty grapefruit can be preserved naturally for half a year. Although the outer skin is dry, when cut open, the grapefruit segments still retain their sweet flavor.

Mr. Tran Minh Tan, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Doan Hung district, said that currently, the district has more than 2,700 hectares of grapefruit, including 1,400 hectares of specialty grapefruit. Grapefruit output in 2024 is estimated at 36,200 tons, with revenue of about more than 300 billion VND.

According to Mr. Tan, this year's output will decrease slightly compared to 2023 due to the impact of storm No. 3, which damaged more than 200 hectares of grapefruit.

In Doan Hung, the 2-hectare grapefruit garden with nearly 300 grapefruit trees, mainly Bang Luan grapefruit, of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Than's family (in zone 4, Bang Luan commune) is well-known. Mrs. Than's grapefruit garden is one of the large, long-standing specialty grapefruit gardens in the commune.

These days, Mrs. Than’s family is eagerly awaiting a bumper grapefruit harvest. According to Mrs. Than, this year’s grapefruit crop is expected to yield about 20,000 fruits. Even before the main season, traders have come to buy and place orders for dozens of trees, waiting to pick them when the harvest is ready.

Ms. Than's family is one of 50 members of the Bang Luan Grapefruit and General Service Cooperative. The cooperative currently has a total grapefruit area of over 400 hectares. In 2023 alone, the revenue of the cooperative's members will reach 40 billion VND.

In addition to the main product of specialty grapefruit, Bang Luan Grapefruit and General Service Cooperative also produces and supplies to the national market additional products from grapefruit such as: grapefruit jam, grapefruit pulp, grapefruit essential oil and grapefruit seeds and seedlings.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Oanh, Director of Bang Luan Grapefruit and General Service Cooperative, shared that to have a bumper grapefruit harvest, grapefruit garden owners must take very good care of the fruit. The harvest time for this specialty grapefruit starts from August to November of the lunar calendar.

But the best time to harvest the most beautiful and delicious grapefruit is in the 10th lunar month, when the grapefruit reaches its correct weight, nutritional content and sweetness are also at their highest.

“With current market prices, our cooperative is expected to earn about 36-38 billion VND from the 2024 grapefruit crop,” said Mr. Oanh.
