The Gap in Cyber Culture

The explosion of “exposés” and public disclosure of private lives has increasingly turned social media into a “battlefield” – where everyone feels entitled and can easily criticize others. This reflects a serious gap in online culture.

Waste of time and money

In recent days, the dramas (scandals) between some famous individuals on the internet have attracted millions of views and thousands of debates on social networks. Not only that, these private scandals also carry the element of benefit when some people prepare related songs to announce at the right time, to attract audiences; others turn on the feature of charging for those who want to listen to explanations and comments... Not only the above incident, other scandals on the internet from domestic to foreign countries such as the case of actors Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron... also caused an explosion on social networks in Vietnam.

According to psychologist Dao Le Hoa An, member of the Advisory Council for Policy and Law on Youth and Children, National Committee on Vietnamese Youth, there are three main reasons why many people are fascinated by gossip stories, even though they are not related to their lives. The first is the FOMO effect (fear of missing out), in an era where information changes every minute, not updating the latest stories makes many people fear falling behind in information. Next is the feeling of relief when following other people's troubles with the notion that at least they are still luckier. And the most important thing, according to Dr. Hoa An, is the feeling of "power".

“Asking questions, joining in discussions or attacking someone on social media gives some people a sense of control over the situation and the right to judge others. In reality, they are just people who are caught up and led into other people’s games,” said Dr. Hoa An.

Dr. Hoa An also warned that online denunciations are often one-sided or staged to steer public opinion in a direction favorable to the creator of the event. Viewers are easily manipulated and led into an endless “war”, while the ones who lose money and time are themselves.

Distortion of standards and values of life

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diem (43 years old, living in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City) shared that her two children who are in middle school are also caught up in online dramas. “What I worry about most is that children who follow such stories will be negatively affected. The chaotic love-hate stories in which young people with a bit of fame are fighting each other on social networks will make many other young people lose faith in true feelings, in civilized behavior and treatment of each other. Many young people even gradually consider adultery, betrayal... to be normal,” Ms. Ngoc Diem said.

Faced with this situation, many young people have spoken out to call on social media users to stop paying attention, so as not to be led in an uncontrolled and useless way. Ho Nguyen Thanh Nhan (28 years old, software engineer, living in District 7) expressed: “I have set up a group specializing in information about security software, currently with nearly 5,000 members. Recently, the forum has continuously posted warnings for members not to participate in comments or be curious about personal, useless matters and then get carried away, participating in arguments that are both a waste of time and unintentionally promote bad content that spreads rapidly on social media.

The explosion of “exposés” also reveals the dark side of social media, which is a place lacking in debate culture and respect. Instead of civilized dialogue, many people tend to choose public attacks and defamation to express their opinions. This gradually turns the social media environment into a place filled with negativity, even hostility.

According to psychologist Dao Le Hoa An, social networks are not only a place for communication but also an environment that shapes the life values of young people. “When shocking, negative content is praised and has millions of views, many people mistakenly believe that this is the “formula for success”. Instead of trying to develop themselves, they chase fame by creating controversial events and stirring up public opinion. “Don’t let temporary curiosity turn you into a money-making tool for those who create drama. Your value does not lie in knowing all the gossip on social networks, but in being able to control your own life, emotions and thinking”, said Dr. Hoa An.

The livestream confrontation between account V. and his two ex-girlfriends took place at the end of March, attracting more than 4.8 million viewers, at one point reaching 1.6 million viewers at the same time. It is worth mentioning that account V. turned on the fee feature for anyone who wanted to comment. After deducting 50% of the fee for the platform, account V. earned more than 40 million VND. Not to mention, with the huge number of views, this account continued to receive about 300,000 diamonds (equivalent to 3,000 USD).
