Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for October 2025 delivery fell 11 yuan to 3,244 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures fell for a third straight session, as concerns about the demand outlook in top consumer China prevailed amid a lack of details on expected stimulus measures in the world’s second-largest economy.
The most-traded iron ore contract for May delivery on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 1.48% to 765 yuan ($105) a tonne.
The contract hit its lowest since January 13 at 761.5 yuan a tonne in early trading.
Benchmark iron ore for April delivery on the Singapore Exchange fell 1.58% to $100.55 a tonne, after hitting its lowest since March 12 at $100.15 a tonne earlier.
"The sharper decline in new construction data has dampened market confidence, fueling broad risk-off sentiment," said Chu Xinli, an analyst at China Futures.
New construction starts by floor area fell 29.6% in January and February, following a 23% drop in 2024, official data showed on Monday.
Moreover, persistent concerns about the demand outlook amid an escalation of the global trade war sparked by new tariffs by US President Donald Trump are also weighing on prices.
India has recommended a 200-day temporary 12% tariff on some steel products, known locally as a safeguard duty, to curb imports. Elsewhere, Taiwan will maintain anti-dumping duties on stainless steel from China and South Korea for five years.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE also fell, with coking coal down 2.65% and 1.81%, respectively. Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell. Rebar fell 0.84%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.42%, rebar fell 0.7% and stainless steel fell 0.15%.
