Korean Football Federation proposes to fire coach Klinsmann

On the afternoon of February 15, the professional council (called the National Team Strengthening Committee) of the Korea Football Association (KFA) held a meeting to evaluate and analyze the team's performance at the 2023 Asian Cup. This agency proposed to fire coach Jurgen Klinsmann, waiting for KFA President Chung Mong-gyu to make the final decision.

" The committee determined that coach Klinsmann is no longer able to take charge of the national team for various reasons. We agreed that a replacement is needed," said KFA Technical Director Hwang Bo-kwan.

Regarding the failure at the 2023 Asian Cup, Mr. Hwang said: " Although meeting Jordan again, the team lacked tactical preparation and lacked observation and appropriate use of players. Coach Klinsmann said that the discord between Lee Kang-in and Son Heung-min affected the team's performance without admitting the lack of tactical preparation ."

In addition, reports from the expert council also show that coach Klinsmann lacks leadership capacity. The German strategist does not understand internal conflicts correctly, and seems to ignore opinions about his work attitude when he spends little time in Korea. He is mainly in the US and works remotely. This makes the Korean public doubt the effectiveness of the work that Mr. Klinsmann does.

" The Korean Football Association will consider firing coach Klinsmann as soon as possible and then carry out further procedures, such as appointing an interim coach ," Mr. Hwang added.

KFA President Chung Mong-gyu has been criticized for appointing coach Jurgen Klinsmann without following the selection process. If the German coach is fired, the KFA could have to pay up to $4.5 million in compensation. This figure is equivalent to 3.7% of the Korea Football Association's 2024 budget. His contract runs through the 2026 World Cup.

Before today's meeting (February 15) of the professional council, several groups of Korean fans came to the KFA headquarters to call for the dismissal of coach Klinsmann.
