Vietnam team received many bitter consequences from VAR
In the most recent major tournament, the 2023 Asian Cup, the Vietnamese team lost all 3 matches, including 2 matches against Indonesia and Iraq where we received red cards.
The penalty kick in the 42nd minute brought a 1-0 victory for Indonesia - their first victory over Vietnam in a long time, while goalkeeper Nguyen Filip had to face two 11m penalties from Iraq when VAR intervened.
The Vietnamese team started learning how to play with VAR from the quarter-finals of the 2019 Asian Cup, where we had to pay our first tuition fee when Bui Tien Dung's foul helped the Japanese team score the only goal from the 11-meter mark, after VAR reminded the referee to point to the 11-meter mark.
After that, Coach Park Hang-seo and his team went through unforgettable experiences, with many controversies from penalties and red cards with the intervention of VAR in the third qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup.
At lower levels, Vietnamese youth teams have also had less than stellar experiences playing in matches using VAR, in continental finals, often receiving red cards and penalties.
In conclusion, VAR is still a technology that brings not very positive experiences to the Vietnamese team. We have not yet learned the lessons from VAR, let alone wisely applied the characteristics of this technology to exploit the opponent's weaknesses.
Taking advantage of VAR at AFF Cup 2024?
At the AFF Cup 2024, the Organizing Committee will apply VAR in the entire match. Accordingly, in the group stage matches, VAR will be applied with 10 cameras in the corners of the field.
From the semi-finals onwards, to meet higher professional requirements in terms of tension and competition for higher achievements, the number of cameras installed to serve VAR on football fields will be increased to 12.
To ensure consistency and professionalism, VAR will be managed by an independent provider rather than relying on the resources available to member states.
This information, after being published on the Asean Football page, received quite a lot of interactions, in which many regional fans expressed "concern" for Vietnam and Indonesia.
Certainly, the AFF Cup 2024 Organizing Committee will have sharing sessions with each team about the application of VAR technology. This is a mandatory procedure in every major tournament in the past few years that Vietnamese teams have regularly participated in.
But looking at the unhappy precedent of previous tournaments, coach Kim Sang-sik will have to have a special method of "training" his students to avoid making mistakes that cause disadvantages, before taking a step further to make the most of VAR to get the best results.
The good news is that V-League has applied VAR in the past 2 years, especially this season VAR has covered most matches, helping Vietnamese players get used to playing with new technology. But don't forget, referees in major tournaments will shake hands more tightly and strictly than in domestic tournaments.
Hopefully, the previous valuable lessons, especially the hot experience at the 2023 Asian Cup, will help the Vietnamese team learn how to adapt appropriately to VAR - in the hope that it will help the 2024 AFF Cup truly improve its quality, avoiding referees' "village-style" decisions like in previous tournaments.
