DNVN - Vietnam can increase labor productivity even more if each enterprise and each worker always makes efforts every day. In particular, regularly learning, improving skills, accessing and mastering science and technology are considered necessary.

Vietnam's labor productivity is quite low.

According to data from the World Bank (WB), Vietnam's labor productivity in 2022 calculated in 2017 USD at purchasing power parity (PPP) is 2,400 USD, only 11.4% compared to Singapore, 35.4% compared to Malaysia, 79% compared to Indonesia...

At the forum "Improving National Labor Productivity in 2024" on May 26 in Hanoi, Dr. Nguyen Tu Anh - Director of the General Economic Department, Central Economic Committee said that if looking at this figure, Vietnam's labor productivity is low. The reason is that the structure of Vietnam's economy has most of its workers working in the informal sector and households, the number of workers working in the enterprise sector accounts for only 29.2% of employed workers in 2022.

However, this number of workers creates about 60% of GDP for the whole economy. Of which, the private sector creates about 10%, the FDI enterprise sector creates about 20.14% and the state enterprise sector creates about 29% of GDP.

Vietnam's GDP in 2022 at purchasing power parity (PPP) in 2017 USD is 1,321,694.15 million USD. Thus, with the creation of 60% of GDP, the labor productivity of workers in Vietnamese enterprises will be 53,582 USD/worker. This will be equal to 30% compared to Singaporean workers working in enterprises or state agencies.

"With this figure, the labor productivity of workers in Vietnamese enterprises will be equal to about 30% of the labor productivity of workers in Singaporean enterprises. However, Vietnam's labor productivity is quite low.

Therefore, one of the things we need to do to increase labor productivity from a macro perspective is to accelerate the development of more enterprises than the target of 1.5 million enterprises by 2025, an important goal to promote labor productivity," Mr. Tu Anh said.

What solutions increase labor productivity?

From the actual work of a direct worker, Ms. Phung Thi Hanh - a worker at Hanoi Shirt Factory - Garment Corporation 10 believes that domestic labor productivity can be improved even more if each enterprise and each worker always strives every day. Each worker, even if doing very ordinary work, must have goals, aspirations and self-respect.

We must constantly learn, improve our skills, access and master science and technology, to be better today than yesterday and better tomorrow than today. Only when we improve productivity can we have the opportunity to increase our income, reduce working hours to take care of our family, children and regenerate our labor force.

Representing textile workers, Ms. Hanh proposed that the Government and ministries and branches study and issue policies to support training for businesses that employ a large number of workers, especially new workers.

At the same time, he expressed his hope that the Government would have policies to replicate the model of businesses with kindergartens, medical centers, and vocational schools like May 10 for businesses that employ many female workers.

Mr. Mai Thien An - a member of the union of Intel Products Vietnam Co., Ltd., headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City, said that if a company wants to improve product quality and brand, it requires employees to have good education, skills, soft skills and work ethic. Employees who want to increase their income must have good professional skills, attitude, awareness and manners.

However, in reality, many workers, especially workers, are still not really interested in and prioritize training, raising awareness, organizing discipline and industrial style.

Mr. An proposed and recommended that there be more forms of teaching and equipping industrial style for workers from an early age so that it becomes a "habit, way of thinking, way of working" while still in school, considering orientation at appropriate levels.

There are financial regulations that allow grassroots unions to have enough resources to invest and spend on training, propaganda, and rewards for industrial style and labor discipline.

Meanwhile, emphasizing the important role of emulation movements in enterprises, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thang - Chairman of the Hanoi Industrial Parks Trade Union proposed to maintain and expand the skilled worker competitions in provinces and cities where there are many workers with the participation of the government and employers. Enterprises need to pay more attention to investing in time, facilities and funds to organize skilled worker competitions to improve labor productivity, product quality and train high-quality human resources.

Ms. Truong Thi Thu Ha, Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR), Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, proposed that the Ministry of Science and Technology consider and issue a circular with detailed instructions on remuneration payment for authors and co-authors of recognized innovations. This is a recognition and a great motivation for employees who are passionate about scientific research.

Believing that a satisfactory salary, bonus and welfare regime is an important driving force to promote increased labor productivity, Dr. Pham Thu Lan, Institute of Workers - Trade Unions, Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, proposed that the Government direct the National Wage Council in the coming time to research and establish a satisfactory minimum wage, and advise the Government so that wages are truly a driving force to increase productivity.

Increase social insurance coverage to 60% by 2030 as planned by the trade union organization, meeting the expectations of workers.

In addition, the Government needs to speed up the construction of social housing along with infrastructure of schools, hospitals and other basic amenities so that low-income workers can achieve their dream of owning their own home in the coming years.
