Motivation for Universities and Colleges
After the success of the first season with 43 universities, colleges and academies participating in many regions across the country, the 2nd Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2024 promises to be even more attractive when welcoming the participation of 64 teams, an increase of 52% of the number of participating teams compared to the previous season. With a large number of participating teams, along with the qualifying round and final round campaign spanning 6 regions from north to south, the Vietnam Youth Student Football playground once again demonstrates its prestige and influence in the current Vietnamese school football system.
In charge of school football of the Ho Chi Minh City Football Federation and having many years of experience in student football, expert Doan Minh Xuong shared: "When the Vietnam Student Association and Thanh Nien Newspaper organized the first Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament, it was clear that we had a very useful playground for students. First of all, this is a tournament that helps the young generation to practice health, exchange and enhance the spirit of solidarity and learning. In the long term, I hope this is a playground to find and hone bright talents for Vietnamese football.

I appreciate the organization of Thanh Nien Newspaper in creating this very meaningful tournament. I expect the teams participating in the tournament to be well prepared professionally. In addition, to maintain a good image for the tournament, the teams will maintain a noble sportsmanship spirit, compete at their best, and the organizing committee will operate the tournament objectively and scientifically, with strict regulations, the fans will come to the stadium in large numbers, cheering enthusiastically and civilly like (or even more than) the previous season to create momentum for the second tournament."
Students sweat for football team selection exam: Competition rate is higher than university entrance exam
Former VFF Vice President Pham Ngoc Vien stated that the Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament is the "pioneer arrow" for the further development of the school football movement in Vietnam. "Building a movement and a tournament to gather football lovers will motivate universities, colleges and academies to build teams in a more thorough and meticulous manner. Last September, the Vietnamese student team participating in the Asian Student Football Championship with strong teams such as Korea, Oman, Philippines... was also a resonance, as well as an initial encouragement for Vietnamese student football.

In the strategy for developing Vietnamese football to 2030, with a vision to 2045, student football is placed in a core position. The reason is that in many universities, colleges and academies, the student football movement is currently developing strongly, first of all to promote physical education, ethics and willpower in students. In the VFF project that I drafted previously, it mentioned key aspects to develop school football, including building facilities in universities, colleges and academies, organizing movements and annual professional tournaments in many regions across the country. Thanks to the pioneering flag of the Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament, the movement and organization have been met, bringing a joyful and exciting atmosphere to students, promoting the sports training movement to be better and more effective in universities," Mr. Pham Ngoc Vien shared.
" MINE" OF TALENT
In many countries that develop school football, student football is a place to discover and train excellent talents for the national teams. At the 18th ASIAD, the Japanese Olympic team won the silver medal with 5 university students. Two of them later broke through to become national players, namely Ayase Ueda and Kaoru Mitoma - a star who plays for Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League. Mitoma and Takuma Asano, a player who plays for Bochum in the Bundesliga, both grew up in the Japanese school football network from elementary school to university. Mr. Doan Minh Xuong hopes that in the future, Vietnamese school football, with the pioneer being the student tournament organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper, can also do this.
Joy of victory
"Creating a playground for student football is very good, but I expect more. It is the expectation that the Central Youth Union, the Vietnam Student Association, Thanh Nien Newspaper, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the Ministry of Education and Training will work together to build a comprehensive school football system, from primary, secondary, high school to university, college, and academy levels, like developed countries in Asia such as Korea and Japan are implementing. From the school football system network, pioneered by the Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament, we can select potential players who are suitable for modern football trends. There will be players who do not choose to become completely professional, but can still play football and pursue their education," Mr. Xuong emphasized.
Many strong emotions came from the tournament
Former Vice President of VFF Pham Ngoc Vien shared the same opinion when assessing: "Vietnamese student football has different characteristics from strong school football in Asia such as Korea and Japan. For example, in the youth training stage, in the above countries, many schools from primary, secondary, high school to university level have facilities and systematic training curriculum to train potential players. The organization and professionalism in football development and competition movements between schools in Korea and Japan are very high. These can absolutely be very high-quality human training centers for football. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, at universities, colleges and academies today, football training is simply a physical education activity, training for health. However, we are capable of creating similar professionalism and methodical training, the problem is that it takes time".
The 2nd qualifying round of the Vietnam Youth Student Football Tournament - 2024 will be held in 6 regions across the country.
Group A - Northern region takes place from February 26 - March 5, 2024 at Thuy Loi University (Hanoi), with 9 participating teams.
Group B - Central Coast region (Hue - Da Nang) takes place from February 28 - March 26, 2024 at Tay Loc Stadium (Hue City), with 8 participating teams.
Group C - South Central - Central Highlands region takes place from March 1 - 7, 2024 at Nha Trang University Stadium, Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province, with 6 participating teams.
Group D - Southeast region takes place from January 12 - 18, 2024 at Bau Thanh Stadium, Long Dien District, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, with 6 participating teams.
Group E - Ho Chi Minh City area takes place from January 6 - 21, 2024 (or January 25, 2024) at Ton Duc Thang University (Ho Chi Minh City), with 29 participating teams.
Group F - Southwest region takes place from March 3 - 9, 2024 at Can Tho Stadium (Can Tho City), with 6 participating teams.
