Don't let Lebanon become the next Gaza

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/06/2024

"A reckless act, a miscalculation could spark a disaster that would go beyond borders, and clearly beyond imagination. The people of the region and the world cannot allow Lebanon to become the next Gaza," Mr. Guterres told reporters, Reuters reported.

Hezbollah has been engaged in a constant battle with Israel since Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Tens of thousands of people in southern Lebanon have been forced to evacuate as Tel Aviv carries out raids.

Will Lebanon be dragged into a devastating war?

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the UN peacekeeping force is stationed in southern Lebanon to monitor the situation and take steps to help ease tensions and avoid miscalculations.

"The world must make it clear that immediate de-escalation is not only possible, it is necessary. There should be no military solution," he said.

Iran’s delegation to the United Nations stressed on June 21 that Hezbollah has the capacity to defend Lebanon against Israel. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah stressed on June 19 that the force would launch a war “without restraint, without rules and without limits” if Israel launches a major offensive campaign against Lebanon, according to Al Jazeera.

Tensions between Hezbollah and Israel have been rising in recent weeks. The Israeli military said on June 18 that a plan for an attack in Lebanon had been approved. Meanwhile, observers say Israel could suffer heavy losses if it persists in launching an all-out war against Lebanon, as Hezbollah is a much better-armed force than Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
