When will coach Kim Sang-sik take over the Vietnam U.22 team?

It is expected that coach Dinh Hong Vinh will continue to serve as interim coach of the U.22 Vietnam team during the FIFA Days training session in June, when coach Kim Sang-sik and the Vietnam team prepare for the extremely important match against Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

This will be an opportunity for Mr. Dinh Hong Vinh to check and re-evaluate the young U.22 players during the precious break before the last 2 rounds of V-League 2024 - 2025. From there, the coaching staff will make a detailed assessment so that coach Kim Sang-sik can have a general to detailed view of the level of adaptation and development of each player.

Coach Dinh Hong Vinh's recent success will create an important foundation before coach Kim Sang-sik directly takes charge of the Vietnam U.22 team from the training session in July. When the 2024-2025 V-League ends, Mr. Kim will join the Vietnam U.22 team to compete in the Southeast Asian U.22 tournament in Indonesia, marking the first time he has played alongside his young players in an official tournament. This will also be a very important preparation step before Mr. Kim continues to take charge of the Vietnam U.22 team in two strategic goals: the Asian U.23 qualifying round in September and the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand at the end of the year, where Vietnam will aim to regain the gold medal in men's football.

When will U.22 gather?

At the FIFA Days in March, the U.22 Vietnam team trained in parallel with the Vietnam team, where coach Dinh Hong Vinh was given the temporary role while Mr. Kim Sang-sik focused on the Vietnam team. The results were quite positive, as young players, with many new names or those overshadowed by key players, shined together. The absence of more than half of the main squad, on the contrary, helped the U.22 Vietnam team discover a series of names showing remarkable progress such as Van Binh, Van Ha, Hieu Minh, Nhat Minh, Le Viktor, Van Truong... Although not going to China, coach Kim Sang-sik has a firm grasp of the form of these players, plus video tapes, statistics from the technical and analytical department. Plus the assessments from the players who have just trained with the Vietnam team such as Van Khang, Vi Hao, Thai Son... or returned after injuries such as Nam Hai, Duc Viet... will help the coaching staff have many choices.

In particular, Mr. Kim's direct command will create a strong atmosphere of encouragement, because the AFF Cup 2024 has shown that the former Korean player is always willing to give opportunities to new factors. Commentator Vu Quang Huy commented: "I find this generation of U.22 Vietnam quite good, when there are brothers playing from the 2023 SEA Games while currently there are young players who are on the rise. When entering the official tournament, the team will have players returning from the Vietnam national team. I think the U.22 Vietnam team can be optimistic in this atmosphere, with a combination of young players who are developing well, young but experienced and a new breeze from overseas Vietnamese factors. Coach Kim Sang-sik's direct leadership will create good stimulation, a good motivation for the young generation".
