The focus of this year’s upgrades is on the entry-level AirPods. Apple currently sells five versions of AirPods, including: AirPods Gen 2 for $129, AirPods Gen 3 for $169 with a Lightning charging case or $179 with a MagSafe charging case, AirPods Pro Gen 2 for $249, and AirPods Max for $549.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple will stop selling AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 this year, replacing them with two AirPods 4 versions.
Specifically, AirPods 4 is said to have a design that is a “mix” between AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro, with shorter earpieces. However, this low-end headset will not be able to replace the ear tip like the Pro version.
In terms of features, the high-end AirPods 4 will have noise cancellation, which the lower-end models don't have. Both versions will come with a new USB-C charging case. The more expensive version will have a built-in speaker - improving the Find My feature. Typically, Apple can introduce AirPods at the same time as the new iPhone in September.
Meanwhile, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also reported that Apple is developing a low-cost version of AirPods to launch in 2024. The headset model could be called AirPods Lite, with a starting price of $99.
Mark Gurman said that Apple believes AirPods 4 could be a "hit" for the market, planning to produce 20 to 25 million units - a record for this headset model since its launch.
Also this year, Apple will launch the new AirPods Max. However, the only change is the switch from the Lightning port to USB-C. According to Bloomberg, the iPhone giant has no other plans to upgrade its top-end headphone line in 2024. This headphone model still uses the same H1 chip as the model launched in 2020. This means it will continue to lack some new features on AirPods such as Adaptive Audio or Siri.
For AirPods Pro fans, they will have to wait until 2025 - when Apple can launch a new design, use new chips and new features including hearing testing.
