Rewarding the female nurse who saved the life of a 7-day-old baby who choked on milk

After learning about the nurse Nguyen Thi Thao (34 years old, working at Hai Phong Children's Hospital)'s efforts to save a 7-day-old baby who had stopped breathing and had stopped breathing due to choking on milk, Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee Nguyen Van Tung signed a decision to reward 10 million VND to promptly commend and spread the good deeds of the nurse.

Nurse Nguyen Thi Thao was recruited to work at Hai Phong Children's Hospital since 2011 and is working in the hospital's Respiratory Department.

Recalling the time when she had to rescue a 7-day-old baby who choked on milk, nurse Thao said that on the evening of July 4, while walking on the street with relatives, she accidentally encountered a newborn baby who had choked on milk, had stopped breathing, and had a heart attack.

“With the intuition of a mother and the responsibility of a medical staff, I tried my best to perform CPR, suction the choking milk, give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to the baby and, together with the family, take the baby to the nearest medical facility for emergency treatment,” said Ms. Thao.

Nurse Thao took a taxi with the child's relatives to try to rescue the child all the way to Thuy Nguyen District General Hospital, and carried the child straight to the Resuscitation Department, then assisted the on-duty team to rescue the child.

When the baby's pulse returned, the patient was transferred to Hai Phong Children's Hospital for intensive treatment. Fortunately, after the emergency treatment by the medical team of Thuy Nguyen Hospital and Children's Hospital, the baby has gradually recovered.

At the ceremony to commend and reward nurse Thao's life-saving actions, Mr. Le Tien Chau - Secretary of the Hai Phong City Party Committee - assessed that the above actions were normal, daily work of the medical team, but very noble and worthy of respect.

According to Mr. Chau, the city's recognition is also to spread this beautiful image to everyone because this is an example that not only people in the medical profession but also in other professions can learn from because of their perseverance, effort and courage.

"I heard that at the time of treatment, some people said the child had already passed away, but with the love of a mother and a doctor, nurse Thao persevered and made every effort to save the child," said Mr. Chau.
