Faced with the complicated developments of the measles epidemic, the Ministry of Health sent an urgent dispatch to the People's Committees of provinces and cities regarding the implementation of measles prevention and control work, and at the same time established 6 inspection and supervision teams to strengthen this work.

On March 19, Deputy Minister of Health Le Duc Luan signed an urgent dispatch to the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities requesting to ensure funding for measles vaccination.

Following the Prime Minister's direction in Official Dispatch No. 23 on accelerating measles vaccination, the Ministry of Health requests localities to urgently deploy disease prevention measures, especially vaccination.

According to the dispatch, provinces and cities need to direct specialized agencies to strictly implement the Prime Minister's instructions on strengthening the prevention and control of flu, measles and respiratory diseases.

The Ministry of Health is committed to providing adequate and timely measles vaccines to localities based on vaccine demand proposals that provinces have sent to the Ministry before 5:00 p.m. on March 17.

In addition, localities need to proactively allocate funds from local budgets to implement vaccination campaigns, including screening vaccination subjects, organizing vaccination sessions, and other tasks as prescribed. The Ministry of Health also requires localities to maintain the operation of the expanded immunization program, including measles vaccination.

To ensure effective implementation of measles prevention and control, the Ministry of Health has decided to establish 6 inspection teams to monitor, guide and direct epidemic prevention and control in provinces and cities.

The teams will be assigned to inspect areas with high numbers of suspected measles cases or where the progress of the vaccination campaign is slow.

Specifically, Group 1 will inspect provinces and cities in the Northern region, Group 2 in the Central region, Group 3 in the Southern region, and Group 4 in the Central Highlands region. In addition, Groups 5 and 6 will conduct surprise inspections in the Northern, Central Highlands, Central and Southern provinces to ensure that epidemic prevention work is implemented promptly and effectively.

The inspection teams will assess the progress of the measles vaccination campaign implementation plan and will summarize the results and propose solutions to enhance the effectiveness of epidemic prevention and control work in localities.

According to the Ministry of Health, the measles epidemic situation globally is on the rise, with measles cases in many countries increasing sharply due to low vaccination rates, reaching only 80% or lower.

In Vietnam, since the beginning of the year, the country has recorded nearly 40,000 suspected cases of measles, including 5 deaths related to this disease.

The health sector is concerned that measles outbreaks will continue, especially in areas with low vaccination rates and limited access to health services.

Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan also warned that failure to fully vaccinate could have serious consequences, especially in the context of climate change, when disease conditions become more unpredictable.

To cope with this situation, the Ministry of Health has launched a nationwide measles vaccination campaign in 2025. The campaign will expand the vaccination target group to include children aged 6-9 months in 24 provinces and cities, and add children aged 1-10 years, along with high-risk groups in 17 other provinces and cities.

Recently, the Prime Minister also issued Official Dispatch No. 23/CD-TTg requesting the Ministry of Health to ensure adequate supply of measles vaccines and timely distribution to localities to effectively implement the vaccination campaign, which is expected to end on March 31.

The Ministry of Health recommends that people actively participate in the vaccination campaign to protect their own health and that of the community, and contribute to preventing measles outbreaks nationwide.
