'Unprecedented' sand mining for highway construction

The leader of Soc Trang province said this is "unprecedented".

On June 30, the People's Committee of Soc Trang province coordinated with units to start exploiting river sand at the MS05 sand mine on the Hau River to serve the construction of component project 4 of the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway construction investment project phase 1.

Component project 4 through Soc Trang province has a total length of about 58.4 km located in My Tu, My Xuyen and Tran De districts.

Leaders of the Provincial Party Committee and People's Committee of Soc Trang province attended the groundbreaking ceremony for sand mining on the Hau River.

According to the People's Committee of Soc Trang province, the MS05 sand mine is located in An Thanh 1 and An Thanh Dong communes (Cu Lao Dung district) with an area of ​​about 100 hectares. The total sand reserves allowed for exploitation are more than 1.141 million m3, over a period of 2 years. Of which, the first year is 1 million m3, the second year is more than 141,000 m3.

Mining hours are from 7am to 5pm, no mining at night. Total amount of money for mineral exploitation rights is over 7.7 billion VND.

This is one of 5 sand mines (total area of ​​over 450ha, reserve of over 11 million m3) on Hau River in Soc Trang province. Previously, in December 2023, the People's Committee of Soc Trang province handed over the documents of 5 sand mines, with a total area of ​​over 450 hectares and a reserve of about 11 million m3 to contractors. These sand mines are located on the Hau River in the districts of Ke Sach, Cu Lao Dung, Tran De (of Soc Trang province), bordering Tra Vinh province.

Mr. Tran Van Lau - Chairman of the People's Committee of Soc Trang province - said that the assignment of sand mines to contractors for self-exploitation is "unprecedented", according to a special mechanism, so the province is doing and researching at the same time, not skipping steps, not violating regulations.

The Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang Expressway Project Phase 1 has a total length of more than 188 km, passing through 4 provinces and cities: An Giang, Can Tho, Hau Giang and Soc Trang. The starting point of the project connects to National Highway 91 in Chau Doc City (An Giang Province) and the end point intersects with Nam Song Hau National Highway, connecting to Tran De Port Road (Soc Trang Province). The total investment of the project is more than 44,690 billion VND.
