The 2nd Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF II) is directed by the People's Committee of Da Nang City, chaired by the Vietnam Film Promotion and Development Association (VFDA), in coordination with the Department of Culture and Sports, Department of Tourism and other departments of Da Nang City, UNIMedia Company and organizing units.
DANAFF II selects and honors outstanding cinematographic works, rich in humanity, with new discoveries and unique artistic expression; encourages talent, widely introduces to the public new cinematographic works, with high value in content and art of Vietnamese cinema, the Asia-Pacific region and selected films of world cinema.
Attending the opening ceremony of the Da Nang Asian Film Festival were Party Central Committee member Vo Thi Anh Xuan, Vice President; Nguyen Van Quang, Secretary of the Da Nang City Party Committee, and Phan Thi Kim Oanh, Deputy Head of the Office of the President.
Also attending the opening ceremony were Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong, leaders of Da Nang City Nguyen Dinh Vinh, Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Le Trung Chinh, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Nang City, leaders, delegates, ambassadors, representatives of the Consulate General of France, Philippines, China, Laos, Russia... along with many artists, actors and movie lovers.
On the side of the Vietnam Cinema Promotion Association, there was Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, President of the Vietnam Cinema Promotion and Development Association, Director of the 2024 Da Nang Asian Film Festival.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan said that the Da Nang Asian Film Festival, held for the first time in May 2023, was a great success and was voted by the Sports and Culture newspaper as one of the 10 outstanding cultural events of 2023.
"With the support and direction of the authorities at all levels and the coordination of departments, branches of Da Nang city and accompanying units, the Vietnam Association for Cinema Promotion and Development, entered the preparation for the 2nd Da Nang Asian Film Festival - DANAFF 2 with excitement and enthusiasm, gradually overcoming all difficulties and challenges, so that today DANAFF II opens. We are proud that DANAFF is the first film festival in Vietnam to be held annually, which means that there must be real professionalism to maintain non-stop activities right after each film festival, preparing for the next one" - Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan affirmed.
The Director of DANAFF 2 also said that in order to stand firm and develop, DANAFF must achieve professional standards, have its own identity and gather prestigious filmmakers, famous faces of Vietnam and the world, select many good films and have special, attractive programs. "It is gratifying that DANAFF II has initially done those things: Selecting new and quality Asian and Vietnamese films to compete, the films shown in "Today's Vietnamese Cinema" are diverse and rich, the programs "Focus on French Cinema" and "Selected Films of Director Dang Nhat Minh" are unique and interesting. "Coming to DANAFF II are famous stars and filmmakers of the world and Vietnam to participate in the three Jury Boards or bring films to compete" - Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan affirmed.
In particular, the professional and academic quality of DANAFF II is created by 4 international seminars and talks: French cinema and its relationship with Vietnamese cinema; Director Dang Nhat Minh's creative style; Film production cooperation - international experience and development solutions; Sharing experiences in connecting coastal film festivals with the participation of leading international and Vietnamese film experts, artists, managers... In addition, the "Talent Nurturing" Workshop for those passionate about acting will continue to bring fresh and youthful vitality to DANAFF II.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, comrade Le Trung Chinh, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Nang City said that following the success of the first Film Festival, the second Da Nang Asian Film Festival taking place in Da Nang brought many interesting activities, contributing to honoring cinema, expected to become an outstanding tourism - cultural product of Da Nang, creating a spreading force, connecting tourism - cinema, turning potential and advantages to make Da Nang an ideal destination for domestic and international tourists.
Notably, for the first time in Vietnam, DANAFF II presented the Cinema Achievement Award to director, People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh, an excellent filmmaker with a series of works that have become classics, imbued with Vietnamese identity in all subjects.
Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan and Secretary of the Da Nang City Party Committee Nguyen Van Quang presented the trophy and flowers to director and People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh at the opening ceremony.
The film festival takes place from July 2 to 6 with 63 films from many Asian and Vietnamese cinemas, bringing the public an attractive and interesting film feast with many new things to discover.
The DANAFF II program includes many special events and activities including the Opening Ceremony (evening of July 2) and the Closing Ceremony - Award Ceremony (evening of July 6) broadcast live on Vietnam Television, Da Nang Television, Security TV, National Assembly Television, provincial and municipal television stations nationwide and digital platforms; competition categories (Asian Film Competition and Vietnamese Film Competition), the program "Vietnamese Cinema Today"; "Spotlight on French Cinema"; Selected Film Program by director, People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh.
In addition, within the framework of the Film Festival, there are also seminars and talks on “Director Dang Nhat Minh’s creative style”; “French cinema and its relationship with Vietnamese cinema”; “Film production cooperation - international experience and development solutions”; “Sharing experiences in connecting coastal film festivals”; Workshop “Nurturing talent”.
The jury for this year's competition categories includes many famous international and domestic filmmakers.
In the Asian Film category, the President of the Jury is the famous French director and writer of Chinese origin Dai Si Jie. Members of the Jury include former Director of the CineFondation of the Cannes Film Festival Georges Goldenstern (France); Director of the Berlin Film Festival (2019-2024) Meriette Rissenbeek (Germany); actress Tran Nu Yen Khe; young director Ha Le Diem.
In the category of Vietnamese films competing, the President of the Jury is the famous Hong Kong (China) director Quan Cam Bang; members of the Jury: producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, People's Artist Le Khanh, director Leon Quang Le and coordinator and program director Lorna Tee - General Secretary of the Asian Film Alliance Network (AFAN).
NETPAC Award, Chairman of the Jury is Mr. Jean-Marc Thérouanne (Co-founder, Co-Director of the Vesoul Asian Film Festival (France); Jury members are Dr. Mara Matta, Sapienza University, Rome (Italy), Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Bich Ha, former Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Cinema, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Van Lang University.
