(Quang Ngai Newspaper) - Faced with the complicated developments of diseases appearing on crops and livestock, farmers in the province are stepping up measures to care for and prevent diseases for crops and livestock.
At this time, farmers in the province are increasing their efforts to take care of rice and crops. Many farmers said that the winter-spring crop is the main crop for many crops, because of the cool climate and abundant water resources. Currently, the rice is in the flowering and green stage, so many farmers are busy spraying pesticides to prevent grain rot, fungus, and rice blast, to achieve the highest yield.

According to the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, in the province, more than 1,600 hectares of rice were damaged by rats and more than 730 hectares of rice were infected with brown planthoppers, blast, and leaf rollers. More than 17 hectares of watermelon were infected with downy mildew, nearly 80 hectares of chili were infected with leaf spot and green worms, and nearly 700 hectares of acacia were infected with plant death. In addition, cassava mosaic disease continued to spread, with a total infected area of more than 2,600 hectares. To limit damage, the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection recommends that farmers regularly check their fields to promptly implement measures to prevent and control pests from spreading widely on crops. Avoid overusing pesticides, which increases production costs, increases pesticide residues, pollutes the environment, and disrupts the ecological balance of the fields.
After selling the Tet pigs, from the beginning of the second lunar month, Ms. Dinh Thi Huyen's family in Ta Pia village, Son Hai commune (Son Ha) has restored the herd. This season, Ms. Huyen raised 19 pigs, down from the same period last year. Although the price of live pigs is increasing, Ms. Huyen does not dare to increase the herd. Ms. Huyen said that the weather is erratic, so pigs are very susceptible to disease. Moreover, the price of piglets is very high, so I have to be careful to avoid losses like previous years due to African swine fever. I pay close attention to hygiene, disinfection of barns and proactive vaccination against diseases so that the pigs can grow well.
According to statistics from the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, since the beginning of the year, the province has had an outbreak of lumpy skin disease in cows in 28 households, in 12 communes and towns of the following localities: Binh Son, Son Tinh, Tu Nghia, Tra Bong, Quang Ngai City and Duc Pho Town, with 36 cows infected. Thereby, 16 cows died, with a total destroyed weight of more than 1,800 kg. Currently, there is an outbreak in Tra Binh Commune (Tra Bong) that has not passed 30 days. African swine fever has also appeared in 4 households in Son Tinh District, Quang Ngai City, with 27 infected cows. All African swine fever outbreaks have been controlled. The Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine is coordinating with localities in the province to promote the first vaccination in 2025 for livestock and poultry.
