Starting Tuesday, new users under 18 in the US, UK, Canada and Australia will be offered special teen accounts with limited features and close parental supervision.

Over the next 60 days, existing accounts of users under 18 in these countries will also be converted.
“The three big concerns we hear from parents are: their kids seeing inappropriate content, being contacted by unwanted people, or spending too much time on the app,” said Naomi Gleit, head of product at Meta (Instagram’s parent company).
Teen account restrictions include: Private by default, only receiving messages from followers or connected users; Restricting sensitive content such as violence and videos promoting cosmetic procedures; Sending notifications when used for more than 60 minutes; "sleep" mode that automatically turns off notifications from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., automatically replying that the user is only available for contact during the day.
Parents can monitor their child's activity through the 'Family Hub' feature. They can see who their child is messaging and what they've been messaging for the past 7 days to address any bullying or harassment.
These changes are intended to protect and create a healthier space for teens on social media.
