Environmental criteria in the new rural development program are important to protect the ecological environment and improve the quality of life of the people. In recent times, the mountainous district of Dakrong has gradually overcome difficulties, promoted propaganda, mobilized, and deployed many models to protect the environment, thereby contributing significantly to the implementation of the national target program on new rural development in the area.

Phu Thanh village, Mo O commune currently has 139 households with over 508 people. Up to this point, Phu Thanh is completing the procedures to be recognized as a new rural village. Determining that the environment is one of the difficult criteria to implement, right from the beginning of the new rural construction, Phu Thanh village has focused on the environmental criteria with many good and creative ways, thereby creating consensus and positive response in the community, contributing to creating great changes in the local living environment.
Secretary of Phu Thanh village Party cell Mai Thanh Hong said: “In order to implement environmental criteria, the village has focused on propaganda and mobilization of people to join hands in protecting the living environment and strictly collect household waste. Thanks to that, people's awareness of environmental protection has clearly changed, households strictly collect waste; actively clean up the environment on New Rural Day every month”.
Along with that, to complete the program of building new rural villages, Phu Thanh village has launched the model of bright-green-clean-beautiful-safe villages; built flower roads; built green-clean-beautiful-safe hamlets; built lighting lines...
Thanks to that, the rural appearance in Phu Thanh village has changed a lot since the implementation of the new rural construction program. People are very excited and confident in the results achieved, ready to join hands and contribute towards building a sustainable new rural area.
As a disadvantaged commune of Dakrong district, up to now, Dakrong commune has achieved 10/19 criteria in building new rural areas. Along with implementing other criteria, in recent times, Dakrong commune has always focused on environmental criteria.
“In the process of implementing environmental criteria, the locality pays great attention to propaganda and mobilization work, thereby raising people's awareness of protecting the living environment for themselves and the community. And the most obvious result after implementing the new rural construction program is that people's awareness has been significantly raised, the situation of littering in fields and streams has clearly decreased.
The use of plastic bags has been limited, many households have been conscious in collecting household waste, waste from pesticides to dispose of in the right place... This is a difficult criterion to implement, so in the coming time, the locality will continue to propagate and mobilize people, at the same time seek support from superiors to contribute to completing the new rural program according to the plan", Chairman of Dakrong Commune People's Committee Ho Thanh said.
In recent times, Dakrong district has strengthened the direction of localities to focus on implementation, promote the role, responsibility and contribution of people in implementing environmental criteria. Thanks to that, the work of collecting waste has been carried out by people and units. The communes near the district center have contracted with the Center for Market, Environment and Urban Management to collect and handle waste in accordance with regulations.
The district has directed the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the People's Committees of communes to strengthen propaganda and guide people to actively classify waste at home. Some models of collecting and classifying recyclable waste launched by the Women's Union have been effective in reducing waste released into the environment and providing funds for the associations.
Along with that, the movement to clean up the headquarters of agencies and residential areas has been maintained regularly in some communes such as Trieu Nguyen, A Bung, Huong Hiep, Mo O... The model of "Self-managed roads" of associations and organizations continues to be maintained and expanded in residential areas, villages and communes. Thereby, it has created a new change in awareness and environmental protection actions of local people.
In addition to the achieved results, due to the characteristics of a mountainous district, the socio-economic conditions are still difficult, so the implementation of environmental criteria in Dakrong district still has some limitations. That is, the district's environmental protection infrastructure has not been invested synchronously. Most of the environmental infrastructure such as drainage and wastewater treatment systems; waste collection and treatment systems; cemeteries; water supply systems have not been invested in and built according to regulations, and have not met standards...
People's awareness and income are still low, and there are no conditions to invest in waste treatment and environmental protection projects. Socialization work to build cemeteries and drainage systems for traffic routes has not been carried out.
In some communes, there is still littering on the streets and in rivers; pesticides are used improperly; used pesticide packaging is not collected and treated according to regulations.
On the other hand, the mentality of waiting and relying on the investment of the State and the community of a part of the people in the district still exists. The income of local people is still low, so it is very difficult to mobilize people to build toilets, bathrooms, tanks and environmental treatment facilities in livestock farming.
The livestock market is often volatile, prices are unstable, and diseases are common, so households are not bold enough to invest in waste treatment facilities. Livestock farming is still largely traditional and backward, mainly grazing and paying little attention to disease prevention, so the construction of barns and disease control are not guaranteed.
The budget allocated to implement environmental criteria is not commensurate with the implementation needs. The budget allocated to implement environmental criteria in the new rural development program is still limited while the environmental criteria are set too high, requiring large investments.
To overcome the above difficulties, Dakrong district continues to strengthen propaganda to raise awareness among people. Encourage and mobilize people to participate in the local new rural construction program. At the same time, direct communes to publicize the implementation results as well as plans, assign implementation targets to each village and each household to maintain the achieved results and continue to effectively implement the targets that have not been achieved.
Along with that, the locality balances the budget to support the implementation of environmental criteria, especially investing in the construction of cemeteries, collecting and treating pesticide packaging. Promote the socialization of environmental protection work to diversify resources for implementation.
Collect and treat domestic waste; build hygienic toilets, bathrooms, and water tanks that meet regulations; build cemeteries, renovate village roads and alleys, plant flowers on inter-village and inter-commune roads; plant, care for, and protect trees..., thereby contributing to creating "livable countrysides".
