Meeting and paying tribute to the forces participating in the battle and serving in the battle to protect Ham Rong bridge

On the morning of April 1, Ham Rong ward (Thanh Hoa city) held a meeting to pay tribute to veterans, former militia and forces who directly participated in fighting and serving the fight to protect Ham Rong bridge (April 3-4, 1965 - April 3-4, 2025).

At the meeting, delegates reviewed the 60-year historical tradition of Ham Rong victory.

With its strategic location as the intersection of railways, waterways and roads across Vietnam, 60 years ago, the US imperialists considered Ham Rong Bridge an ideal attack point to cut off the vital traffic route supporting the southern battlefield. In just 2 days, April 3 and 4, 1965, the US mobilized 454 aircraft to drop thousands of tons of bombs on this land. In a moment, the roar of hundreds of jet planes bombing Ham Rong Bridge tore apart the peaceful sky of Thanh Hoa. Every mountain, river, construction site, and factory was a target of fierce enemy attacks. In the life-or-death moments with the enemy, the army and people of Ham Rong remained calm and confident, clearly demonstrating their iron determination to "live on the bridge, on the road - die bravely and steadfastly" and "the heart can stop beating but the road cannot be blocked".

That determination of the army and people of Ham Rong in particular and the army and people of Thanh Hoa in particular defeated all the dark plots of the enemy, achieved many glorious feats by shooting down 47 American planes, capturing many enemy pilots; just on the historic land of Ham Rong in the two days of April 3-4, 1965, our army and people shot down 31 planes of all types.

Along with the armed forces protecting Ham Rong in general, the people of Ham Rong - Yen Vuc - Nam Ngan area in particular contributed a particularly important part to that great achievement. The combination of the militia and self-defense forces of Ham Rong, Yen Vuc, Nam Ngan and the main army forces created a solid, interconnected battle formation, helping us to firmly hold the vital bridge. The anti-aircraft machine gun positions and anti-aircraft artillery in Ham Rong and Yen Vuc created a dense net of fire that defeated many air strikes by American aircraft.

The victory of Ham Rong is a strong testament to the strength of patriotism, solidarity and indomitable will of our army and people. The feats of the army and people of Ham Rong were praised by President Ho Chi Minh. The army and people of Ham Rong were honored to be awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the Party and State.

60 years of Ham Rong victory have passed, continuing the glorious tradition of previous generations, in the process of innovation and national construction, with the spirit of hard work and creativity, the Party Committee, government and people of Ham Rong ward have always united, strived, competed in labor production, achieved many achievements in the fields of economy, culture - society, tourism development... contributing to making the face of the ward increasingly rich, beautiful and civilized.
