Cho Gao District: Proactively preventing and combating drought and saltwater intrusion

Currently, the water level in the side canals and the inner canals is low. In order to have water for production, Binh Phuc Nhut commune mobilizes people to proactively build pumping points from the first and second level canals to the inner canals to irrigate crops to reduce damage in the current weather conditions. On the other hand, the commune mobilizes people to use straw to cover the roots of plants to create moisture for plants, keep the water source clean, and water economically. When the inner canals have water, households install pumping points to irrigate fruit trees and crops.

(ABO) In the face of many fluctuations in drought and salinity, in recent days, when the water level of the canals in the fields has decreased sharply, to ensure fresh water for irrigation, the authorities and people of the communes of Cho Gao district, Tien Giang province have proactively implemented solutions to prevent and combat drought and salinity to minimize damage to agricultural production as well as people's lives.

Cho Gao District has 7,255 hectares of coconut trees, 8,874 hectares of other fruit trees, of which 6,735 hectares are dragon fruit trees, along with many other types of crops. Taking proactive measures to prevent and combat drought and saltwater intrusion, from the beginning of 2025, the district urgently dredged silted canals and ditches to create clear flows and store fresh water for agricultural production.

Mr. Pham Thanh Chung, Binh Ninh hamlet, Binh Phuc Nhut commune said that his family grows dragon fruit on an area of about 7,000 ^m2 . In recent days, the side canal has run out of water and cannot pump water to the dragon fruit garden, so his family had to install a water pump from canal 3-2 to the side canal so that his family and surrounding households can pump water to their crops.

Mr. Le Van Be, Binh Tho Trung Hamlet, Binh Phan Commune, learned from the drought and salinity in previous years and proactively sourced water for irrigation, without waiting for support from the government. Mr. Be said that his family and the people of Binh Tho Trung Hamlet proactively contributed funds and labor to install pumping stations from Cau Sat Canal to the side canals to irrigate dragon fruit, corn and other crops.

Before pumping, the canals are cleaned to create a clear canal, convenient for pumping and storing water. Thanks to the proactive installation of timely pumping points, the fresh water source is still guaranteed for irrigation, and crops grow well.

In recent days, Xuan Hoa sluice gate in Xuan Dong commune, Cho Gao district has been operating to collect water, helping to increase the water level of the first and second level canals. This is a favorable condition for people to pump and store water for production.

Faced with the fluctuating situation of drought and salinity intrusion, people need to take proactive measures to prevent and check the salinity before watering their plants. It is very necessary for local people to be proactive and not wait for support from the government, and unite to overcome difficulties together. People also need to continue to monitor and update the drought and salinity situation daily, proactively store fresh water, maintain water hygiene and use water economically; take good care of and protect the crop area, contributing to ensuring productivity and economic stability.
