At Huawei’s annual flagship event on innovation and intellectual property protection – Bridging Horizons Of Innovations 2023, Song Liuping, Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer, emphasized: “Huawei is willing to share its innovative patents with the world. These efforts will contribute to the common, sustainable development of global industries.”
Huawei is committed to licensing its Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) on a fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) basis. Huawei also announced its royalty rates for all areas it owns, including 4G and 5G handsets, Wi-Fi 6 devices, and IoT products.
Specifically, each 4G and 5G handset will have a maximum royalty fee of $1.50 and $2.50, respectively. Each Wi-Fi 6 user device will have a royalty fee of $0.50. Each IoT Centric device will have a royalty fee of 1% of the actual selling price, capped at $0.75; and the fee for each advanced IoT device will range from $0.30 to $1.
Alan Fan, Vice President and Head of Huawei Intellectual Property Rights Department, added that Huawei has signed nearly 200 bilateral patent licenses to date. In addition, more than 350 companies have obtained licenses to use Huawei's patents through the patent commercialization joint venture model. Through patents, the total royalties paid by Huawei are approximately 3 times the total royalties collected; Huawei's licensing revenue in 2022 is up to US$560 million.
At the event, Huawei also launched a website that provides detailed information about its bilateral licensing programs, from mobile handsets to Wi-Fi and IoT sensor connectivity. “Intellectual property rights are the driving force of cooperation in the technology industry, promoting technical innovation for the benefit of all parties,” said Randall R. Rader, former Chief Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, about Huawei’s efforts.
