Typhoon Yagi's landfall on September 7 severely damaged the medium and low voltage grid in the North, causing millions of households and facilities to lose power, with power outages across the entire province in some places.

According to the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), as of 9:00 p.m. on September 7, Typhoon Yagi had damaged the medium and low voltage power grids in 15 northern provinces and cities. It is estimated that more than 3 million customers (households, businesses, etc.) were affected. Of which, Quang Ninh had 12 medium voltage poles and 2 low voltage poles broken, about 461,000 customers (over 180 power lines) lost power.

In Hai Phong, the damage to the medium and low voltage grid has not yet been counted, but about half a million customers on 142 power lines are without power. Thai Binh currently has about 619,000 customers on 111 power lines affected. Thanh Hoa has more than 32,650 customers on 7 power lines without power...

EVNNPC said that the 110kV power grid in 6 northern provinces where the storm passed through was also severely damaged, especially in Quang Ninh which was almost paralyzed. In Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh... many 110kV lines also had problems and were being taken out of operation (power supply stopped).

In areas with power outages, units must use diesel generators to maintain essential services such as hospitals, clean water, and communications.

Regarding power sources, hydroelectric reservoirs in the Northern region are still operating normally and have not been affected by the storm. Some hydroelectric reservoirs are discharging water as required by the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention.

"The power industry will focus on handling the damaged power lines and restoring power supply immediately after the storm passes," EVN said.

In Hanoi alone, On the afternoon of September 7, due to the impact of the super typhoon, some areas in Hanoi experienced power outages. The affected areas were in districts such as Hoang Mai, Phu Xuyen, Thuong Tin, Thanh Tri, Soc Son, Ba Vi, Son Tay, Me Linh, Quoc Oai, Long Bien... Of which, the suburban districts were the most affected.

EVNHanoi's end-of-day report said the cause of the local power outage was heavy rain and strong winds that caused grid and substation failures. Most of the failures were caused by fallen trees and objects flying into power lines.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Member of the Board of Members, EVNHANOI, also denied the information that "Hanoi will cut off power to the entire city tonight". He said that currently, only Quang Ninh and Hai Phong are the most affected, there are many incidents so the entire power must be cut off. Meanwhile, in Hanoi, there are "only a few sporadic incidents" caused by fallen trees. The electricity industry has plans to immediately restore power to the people.
