More than 3,000 cases of rash fever suspected of measles in Da Nang

(PLVN) - According to the Da Nang City Center for Disease Control, from the beginning of 2025 to March 28, the city recorded 3,074 cases of rash fever suspected of measles, of which 851 cases were confirmed positive for measles virus.

On March 29, a working delegation from the Ministry of Health led by Mr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, inspected measles prevention work at the Da Nang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital in the context of the complicated epidemic with more than 3,000 suspected cases.

According to a report from the Da Nang Center for Disease Control, from the beginning of 2025 to March 28, the city recorded 3,074 cases of rash fever suspected of measles, of which 851 cases were confirmed positive for measles virus.

As of March 28, Da Nang recorded 3,074 cases of rash fever suspected of measles.

Notably, among the measles cases, 54.03% had not been vaccinated. Only 25.73% of cases had received at least one dose of vaccine, 6.21% were not old enough to be vaccinated, and 14.2% of cases did not remember their vaccination history.

In terms of age distribution, people over 11 years old accounted for the highest proportion at 32.82%, followed by children from 5-11 years old at 31.23%. Other age groups included: children from 2-5 years old (17.96%), children from 9-24 months old (11.59%), and children under 9 months old (6.21%).

Meanwhile, the leader of Da Nang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital said that from November 2024 to March 27, 2025, the hospital admitted and treated 1,921 measles cases.

The hospital has arranged 4 departments specializing in measles treatment, including: Department of Tropical Medicine: treatment of mild and moderate measles, requiring oxygen support; Voluntary Pediatrics Department: switching to treatment of mild measles; Pediatric Intensive Care Department: treatment of severe measles cases, respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, CPAP; Neonatal Intensive Care Department: treatment of children with measles under 29 days old from mild to intensive care.

To prevent cross-infection, the hospital has implemented many important measures such as triaging measles patients right from the main hall, deploying separate isolation areas, and fully preparing personnel, supplies, equipment, medicine and infusion fluids... The Ministry of Health highly appreciated and gave timely instructions.

At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Trong Khoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health) said that the Department has sent a document guiding the admission and treatment of measles and other infectious diseases to the Departments of Health. In the coming time, the Department will organize training on new guidelines for hospitals nationwide and is completing the system of statistics and epidemiological reports.

Concluding the meeting, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan acknowledged and highly appreciated the epidemic prevention work in Da Nang, and noted a number of important issues.

Accordingly, Da Nang needs to be prepared to respond to all situations because it is a locality with a large number of migrants, not only with measles but also with other infectious diseases. Hospitals need to develop a comprehensive response process from triage, isolation to infection control to minimize cross-infection.

Deputy Minister Thuan requested the Da Nang Department of Health to prepare sufficient medicines and medical equipment to provide to the units. The units need to continue to strictly implement the instructions of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Health, and at the same time strengthen training and professional education for the lower levels. The Center for Disease Control needs to speed up the progress of measles vaccination to prevent the epidemic.

The Deputy Minister of Health also directed the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management to prepare adequate medicines and medical equipment, and the Department of Disease Prevention should work with the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang to ensure adequate supply of vaccines for localities. In the face of the complicated measles epidemic, people should proactively vaccinate their children according to the schedule and strictly implement disease prevention measures as recommended by the health sector.
