BTO-This is the content organized by the Mountainous Service Center of Binh Thuan province in Ham Can commune, Ham Thuan Nam district on October 6. The workshop was attended by a number of departments and offices of the district and 100 ethnic households that received advance investment to plant hybrid corn in 2023 in Ham Can and My Thanh communes.
According to the Provincial Mountainous Service Center, in recent years, hybrid corn production has encountered many difficulties, the main cause of which is identified as being infected with pests, especially fall armyworms, leading to high production costs and low production efficiency. Therefore, in the summer-autumn crop of 2023, the Center coordinated with CP Vietnam Seeds Company Limited, Ham Can Commune People's Committee and Village 1 Agent to test a demonstration model of the new hybrid corn variety CP 519.
The model was implemented in the corn growing area of Mr. Mang Van Duong's household, in Hamlet 1, Ham Can Commune, with a trial area of 1 hectare. The implementation period was from June 22 to October 6, 2023. After more than 3 months of implementation, the results showed that the CP 519 hybrid corn variety had a growth period of 95 - 110 days; the emergence rate was high, reaching over 95%/ha.
The monitoring process shows that the CP 519 hybrid corn variety is widely adaptable and suitable for many different forms of cultivation. The plant grows well right from the seedling stage, with large and strong roots, large corn stalks, large biomass and good resistance to falling; the corn kernels are orange-yellow, the high seed separation rate is from 81 - 83%, the corn cobs are large, the shell covers the corn well to prevent rotting, high uniformity, good grain setting ability, high grain yield, drought resistance and good development... affirming the superiority of the variety. In addition, the CP 519 corn variety is resistant to some fruit rot diseases, quite resistant to large leaf spot, brown spot, and mild rust. After deducting input costs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, etc., the average income for 1 hectare of the new hybrid corn variety is about 19.5 million VND, compared to the old hybrid corn variety of nearly 12 million VND.
At the field workshop, ethnic minorities growing corn in the two communes were given a field trip to the new hybrid corn model. From the effectiveness of the model, the households all hope that in the near future, the government will transfer new varieties on a large scale to improve crop productivity and efficiency, increase income, and contribute to hunger eradication and poverty reduction.
