On the evening of October 12, Nguyen Van Quyet said goodbye to the Vietnamese team after the match with the Indian team at Thien Truong Stadium. In the early morning of October 13, Coach Troussier posted a rather long status on his personal page to express his respect for his former student.
Below are the original words shared by the French strategist:
"Respect for Van Quyet.
When I first came to Vietnam in 2018, in the first national championship match I watched, Van Quyet was the player who impressed me the most. Until the last days in Vietnam, even now, that impression is still intact. He is a player with great tactical intelligence and technique to express his intention to play the ball. Moreover, he is always very creative to bring individual moments of brilliance, going beyond the framework. That is a valuable quality for an attacking player."
'Class is forever'
FIFA also sent gratitude to Nguyen Van Quyet through the FIFA World Cup Facebook page with a post with the content: "Class is forever". This post includes 8 photos capturing beautiful moments of this striker in the Vietnamese national team, from when he was a young face under coach Falko Goetz until he became a mainstay, competing in major tournaments such as the AFF Cup, ASIAD... In the comment section, many Vietnamese football fans also showed respect for the player born in 1991.
Mr. Troussier continued: " Perhaps, outsiders sometimes find Van Quyet a bit selfish, but when I worked with him in the national team, I thought he was a team player. At that time, it was fortunate that I had his service before retiring, but it was also a pity that I could not use him at the peak of his career. I explained to Van Quyet that it was difficult for me to put him in the first team due to physical reasons. However, he must always be ready to enter the field at any time because he possesses rare qualities.
Coach Troussier gave Van Quyet the opportunity to play in the 2-0 win over the Philippines in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
I know those words were too straightforward and could hurt Van Quyet. But with his professionalism and experience, he respected my decision in particular and the interests of the whole team in general. He always showed his best in every training session, advised the young players to improve themselves, maintain motivation and must step onto the field with the greatest desire, especially in the match against the Philippines team in Manila.
For me, Van Quyet will still be a great player in the history of Vietnamese football, one of the best playmakers the country has ever produced. I am sure that with his qualities, Van Quyet will contribute even more to the future of Vietnamese football. Hopefully, I can have him appear as a coach in the very near future."
