Coach Dragan Talajic is not satisfied with Indonesian fans. |
“I am really sad that the 60,000 spectators at the stadium did not respect our country. I believe Indonesia can do better than this,” Bola quoted coach Talajic as saying after the match with a disappointed look.
The Bahrain coach wanted to highlight the booing and disrespect towards the visiting team from the home fans. At Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (Jakarta), the Bahrain team had to face boos and jeers from the home crowd throughout the match.
The hostile actions of the fans of the archipelago even started from the moment the bus carrying the visiting team arrived at the stadium. The organizing committee had to arrange two armored vehicles to escort the Bahrain team to Gelora Bung Karno.
As the match began, tens of thousands of spectators inside the stadium chanted the word “mafia” repeatedly in an attack on the visitors. The reaction stemmed from the 2-2 draw between the two teams in the first leg in Rifa, where Bahrain scored a controversial stoppage-time equalizer.
The Croatian tactician refused to blame his players after the 0-1 defeat, instead continuing to criticize the Indonesian audience: “I can’t say anything negative about my players. They tried their best when they had to play in unbelievable conditions. The audience was too noisy, there was too much jeering. The players tried, but this time we couldn’t win.”
Asked if the pressure from the crowd had caused the Bahrain players to break down, coach Talajic insisted: “No, it did not affect the players’ mentality. The atmosphere here is very exciting, and that is good for football. But as I said, I do not accept that 60,000 people in the stadium disrespect the symbol or the Kingdom of Bahrain. That is not right, although everything else is fine.”
He also admitted that his team did not play as well as expected: “We are not satisfied with the performance. Bahrain can do better. We regret not being able to show our full potential. However, in the remaining two matches of the group, we will continue to try to prove ourselves and aim for victory.”
