Conference Overview

On March 25, 1993, the Ministry of Forestry of Vietnam agreed to allow the Forest Protection Department to sign a Cooperation Agreement with international organizations such as the IUCN Primate Specialist Group ( IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group); the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations, Germany (ZSCSP), Federal Republic of Germany; the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia on the establishment of the Vietnam Endangered Primate Rescue Center in Cuc Phuong National Park. This agreement marked the establishment of the first Endangered Primate Rescue Center in Vietnam.

Also in 1993, with the consent of the Minister of Forestry, the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) of the Federal Republic of Germany cooperated with Cuc Phuong National Park to implement the project "Cuc Phuong National Park Conservation Program". The program was implemented by 3 units: Frankfurt Zoological Society, Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources and Cuc Phuong National Park. The project focused on researching the status of the Delacour's Langur and building the Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC). EPRC is the first center established in Indochina and is a prestigious address in the rescue, conservation and rehabilitation of rare primates of Vietnam to the wild.

Speaking at the Conference, Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong - Director of the Vietnam Primate Project shared: After 30 years of cooperation with the Frankfurt Zoological Society (1993 - 2013) and Leipzig Zoo (2013 - 2023), the Project for the conservation of rare primates in Vietnam has achieved remarkable results. One of the outstanding results of the Project is the establishment of a Center for the rescue and conservation of rare primates in Vietnam.

Through research, a new species has been discovered for science, the Gray-shanked Douc (Pygathrix cinerea); successfully re-released over 150 individuals of 5 primate species into natural environments such as: Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve, Ke Go Nature Reserve, Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, Cuc Phuong National Park and Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex.

At the same time, the Project has strengthened the infrastructure for forest protection such as cars, motorbikes, walkie-talkies... and organized many field studies on the distribution and status of primates in the wild to develop a conservation strategy for this species in Vietnam...,

Sharing about the project to conserve rare primates in Vietnam, Director of Cuc Phuong National Park Nguyen Van Chinh said that the project to conserve rare primates in Vietnam at Cuc Phuong National Park has long been considered a typical model of endangered species rescue in the region and the world, because the results of the project have helped to successfully conserve and develop rare species with high risk of extinction in the wild. At the same time, it is also a model of research and environmental education, creating a change from awareness to action for the social community, especially generations of students, researchers, and young volunteers; this is also a symbol of effective cooperation in the field of species conservation science between Cuc Phuong National Park and foreign partners in general and Leipzig Zoo in particular; It is true that in this Project, the role of contributing to growth, attracting local labor, increasing income for the Park and the connection and interaction between culture, species conservation expertise of German people and indigenous culture, species conservation expertise from forest workers and the buffer zone community of Cuc Phuong,...
