The number of students from multicultural families across South Korea increased 7.4 percent in 2023 to 181,178, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Educational Development Institute.
The number has been steadily increasing since data on students from multicultural backgrounds were first collected in 2012, suggesting that globalization and demographic changes have led to increased cultural diversity in Korean schools.
Of the total multicultural students, there are 115,639 elementary school students, 43,698 middle school students, and 21,190 high school students. In terms of parentage, 32.1% of parents are Vietnamese, 24.6% of parents are Chinese, 9.1% of parents are Filipino, and 4.2% of parents are Japanese.
