Spreading the passion for… books

Việt NamViệt Nam18/04/2025

A good book not only enriches knowledge but also contributes to spreading the passion for reading to the community, helping to nourish the reader's soul. These are also the messages and themes that Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day (April 21) this year aims to inspire everyone to read, widely developing the reading culture in community life.

BOOKS THAT NOURISH THE SOUL

Unlike other forms of relaxation, reading requires the reader’s passion and appreciation for each book and page. Many people consider reading as a hobby to kill time or to help improve knowledge, but book lovers consider reading as a way to discover new horizons of knowledge, books are not only “friends” but also “teachers”.

Mr. Tran Vu (Ward 1, Bac Lieu City) is over 70 years old this year, his eyes are no longer bright but he is still very passionate about reading. He often goes to bookstores such as Tran Phu, Fahasa, Phuong Nam... to find newly published books and spends hours reading a favorite book. He is rarely absent from book fairs organized by Ho Chi Minh City book companies and the Provincial Library. Book "fans" have often witnessed Mr. Vu's happy face when finding a rare book.

Mr. Vu shared: “Books are like a “friend” that gives me new knowledge. Books are also a “teacher” that inspires me with good and useful things in life. Many books not only enrich my spiritual life but also guide me to positive thoughts, to appreciate happiness from simple things.”

For many years, Hong Diem (Ward 3, Bac Lieu City) has nurtured her passion for reading. In a quiet corner of a coffee shop, Diem makes friends with the pages of books every morning. For Diem, reading is not only a way to reduce stress and balance emotions, but also to find positive energy for work and life.

INSPIRE READING

At Phung Ngoc Liem Primary School (Bac Lieu City), the flag-raising ceremony at the beginning of the week was filled with excitement and joy with the activity "Book Reading Day 2025". The festival, co-organized by the Provincial Library, truly brought students many useful activities related to books. The spirit of "learning while playing, playing while learning" was demonstrated through the students' passion for reading and then happily answering questions about books; the funny moments when they participated in the book-finding game...

In particular, the festival with the theme "My beloved book" not only aroused the love of books in students but also created opportunities for them to share their passion with the community. At the festival, students actively participated in the movement of donating books to the Provincial Library to supplement the source of good books to serve readers at the grassroots level. Nguyen Ngoc Thao Nguyen - class 5/4, Phung Ngoc Liem Primary School, expressed: "I am very excited to participate in the Reading Festival held in an open space, with many activities close to the age of students. For me, reading is not only to explore the treasure trove of knowledge and culture of humanity but also to form a useful habit for myself. Reading a good book or giving books also has the meaning of inspiring people to read, spreading the positive values from within the book".

With that meaning, this year's Book and Reading Culture Day organized by the Provincial Library carries the message "Reading Culture - Connecting the Community". According to the plan, the unit will organize mobile service trips to residential areas, schools, model book exhibitions, instructions on using e-books, exploiting digital resources... to honor the value and role of reading. At the same time, encourage the inspiration of reading, contribute to building a spiritual and cultural life, promote the moral values, revolutionary traditions, and traditions of learning of the nation.
