Research on renovation and reconstruction options for Long Bien market will be conducted through the AIAC 2025 international architecture competition with the theme "Reconstruction of Long Bien market".
The program was held in Hanoi with the participation of 14 student groups from 14 prestigious universities in the world such as: Tsinghua University (China), Gyeongsang National University (Korea), Tokyo University (Japan), Paris-Belleville School of Architecture (France), Ricardo Palma University (Peru), Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (Vietnam)...
The theme of the competition is to renovate and reconstruct Long Bien market - a famous crowded market in Ba Dinh district, imbued with the cultural and historical values of Hanoi. Through the competition, the design ideas were studied, not only a simple market but also a recreation of the historical and cultural picture of Hanoi: On the banks of the Red River, on the old wharfs and boats, under the historical Long Bien bridge, outside the dike is the former Nua wharf area, located right next to the old quarter, connecting with Dong Xuan market for trade to other places.

The competition aims at design ideas that combine modernity and tradition, between old urban areas and green spaces, creating a multifunctional space for commercial trade without affecting people's lives, combining the organization of cultural spaces, street art, and culinary areas in harmony with the bustling night market scene here, while promoting the cultural and historical values of the area. Good design ideas will be studied by Ba Dinh district to implement future planning and renovation projects for the Long Bien market area.
According to the People's Committee of Ba Dinh District, Long Bien Market (Phuc Xa Ward) has an area of 2.75 hectares, designed with a maximum of 3 floors, and a level 2 market scale. Built in 1991 and put into use in 1992, Long Bien Market is now the largest wholesale market for fruits, agricultural products, and food in Hanoi.
Currently, Long Bien market has cramped space, degraded facilities, and is unable to meet the increasing trading demand. Narrow walkways, lack of parking areas and supporting facilities, leading to traffic congestion and poor environmental sanitation.
In terms of architecture, Long Bien market bears a strong historical mark but has not been properly preserved and upgraded, making the operating space inconvenient, unsafe and unsuitable for modern urban development; at the same time, reducing the ability to attract visitors and traders.
