The New Year is just around the corner, but in the past few days, teacher Tran Minh Hai (born in 1984), a teacher at Thanh Secondary School, Huong Hoa District, has been as happy as if it were Tet. Recently, at the songwriting contest with the theme "Quang Tri - Faith and Aspiration" in 2023, the song he composed was selected to receive the third prize.

Returning from the award ceremony, Mr. Hai said that in the past few days, he has received many congratulations from relatives, colleagues, friends and students. The Van Kieu children at the school are looking forward to his return to share their joy. “Coming to this competition, I did not focus on the prize. My biggest wish is to share a work about my love for the land and people of Quang Tri. I did not expect the song I composed to touch the hearts of so many people,” Mr. Hai shared.
Up to now, Mr. Hai has spent nearly 18 years in the career of educating people in the highlands. Every day, he brings sounds, melodies and dreams to the hearts of children. Every time he teaches, looking down at his students, Mr. Hai remembers his childhood. Born and raised in the mountainous district of Huong Hoa, his childhood was filled with hardship and difficulty.
However, the barriers of life could not stop the passion for music of the highland boy. Unable to afford the musical instruments that were sometimes seen on black and white TV, he and his friends made instruments and drums from discarded objects. Yet, those raw sounds still had a strong attraction, lighting up in him a dream of a musical career. That was also the reason that urged Mr. Hai to pass the entrance exam to the University of Arts, later the Hue Academy of Music.
Leaving behind many opportunities, Mr. Hai decided to return to his hometown Huong Hoa to sow the notes of love. Although life still has many difficulties, every day standing on the podium is a happy day for Mr. Hai.
He is happy to see students absorbed in each lesson; singing praises of their homeland and country and confidently standing on stage... Outside of class, Mr. Hai also spends time supporting high school students in studying to conquer their dream of university.
“After 10 years of working in the town, I was transferred to Thanh commune. At first, I was a bit worried because the road to school was far and more difficult. Meanwhile, I also had to take care of my elderly mother and young children... However, that worry quickly subsided,” said Mr. Hai.
Teaching people in remote and border areas has never been easy. Just motivating students to go to school is hard. Sometimes, homeroom teachers like Mr. Hai have to go to every home to convince grandparents, parents, and students. After successfully motivating, "retaining" students continues to be another big challenge. Mr. Hai and the teachers of Thanh Secondary School always put all their intelligence and passion into each lesson.
The teacher shared: “The greatest luck is that most students in the highlands love music. Every time it’s time for class, they sit down at their desks. Therefore, I always try to innovate teaching methods, using musical notes to “keep” students interested.”
Despite facing many hardships and worries, the precious thing is that Mr. Hai always maintains his passion for work along with his love for music. Currently, he is the head of the music department of the District Department of Education and Training. In addition, being assigned to be in charge of professional matters, he and members of the Huong Hoa District volunteer art troupe have participated in many competitions and performances and brought home great awards. During the days of living with passion, conceiving and composing songs has always been Mr. Hai's joy. Up to now, he has about 20 spiritual children.
Many of his songs have left a deep impression. During the complicated developments of COVID-19, the song "Vietnamese Faith" composed by Mr. Hai was widely shared on social networks, giving strength to millions of people to join hands in preventing and fighting the epidemic. Recently, when hearing information about the songwriting contest with the theme "Quang Tri - Faith and Aspiration" in 2023, beautiful memories and experiences of his homeland came flooding back, urging Mr. Hai to compose the song "Quang Tri, a bright tomorrow". Written with emotion, the song touched the hearts of many people, bringing him third prize in the contest that gathered many prestigious musicians.
After the songwriting contest with the theme “Quang Tri - Faith and Aspiration”, Mr. Hai returned to his daily life and work. However, familiar things seemed to have changed because in the heart of the teacher in the village area, there was now more passion, determination to contribute and dreams for tomorrow. Mr. Hai promised himself that he would continue to send love into every note of music to make life more beautiful.
