Google's move comes after deepfakes have emerged as pornographic content and used for malicious purposes or to spread misinformation. Deepfakes are where a person's face or body has been digitally edited into a photo or video.
While people have long been able to request the removal of images from Google Search, new systems have been developed to make the process easier. When someone successfully requests the removal of non-consensual fake content featuring them from Search, Google’s systems will also filter all related results on similar search pages about them. Copies of images can be processed at the same time, helping to prevent deepfakes.
According to Google, the solutions have been tested and proven effective in tackling other types of non-consensual images. The company asserts that “these efforts are designed to give people more peace of mind, especially if they are concerned about similar content appearing about them in the future.”
Google also said it is making it harder for websites containing deepfake images to appear in search results because of this fake content. Specifically, Google will implement ranking updates to reduce the rankings of websites with fake content.
“Updates we made this year reduced the visibility of explicit image results across query types by more than 70%. With these changes, people can read about the impact of deepfakes on society instead of seeing pages with truly disingenuous fake images,” Google said in a statement.
While these new features mark a big change, Google says the company still has a lot of work to do to tackle the deepfake problem, with more solutions on the way.
