The craze for creating Ghibli-style images using OpenAI's artificial intelligence (AI) tool caused a surge in users of the ChatGPT chatbot last week, leading to server overload and temporary restrictions on the feature.
This trend has spread on social networks, when a series of images bearing the mark of Studio Ghibli - the Japanese animation studio founded by director Hayao Miyazaki - were widely shared.
Famous movies like "Spirited Away" or "My Neighbor Totoro" are the main inspirations for this style.
According to data from Similarweb, the average weekly active users on ChatGPT surpassed 150 million for the first time this year.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company recorded 1 million new users in just 1 hour — an impressive growth rate compared to when ChatGPT launched more than 2 years ago.
SensorTower data also shows that global app downloads and weekly active users on ChatGPT increased by 11% and 5% respectively week-over-week, while in-app purchase revenue increased by 6%.
However, this boom has also brought with it a number of technical issues, as the chatbot has been plagued with problems with multiple local outages over the past week.
OpenAI admits it is facing processing power challenges and warns new updates may be delayed.
In addition, this trend has raised controversy over intellectual property rights. Some legal experts say that current copyright laws only protect specific works, not artistic styles.
Meanwhile, Studio Ghibli has not made any official comments. Director Hayao Miyazaki has openly expressed his negative views on this technology, affirming that he does not want AI to participate in his creative work./.
