Billionaire Bill Gates: In the next 10 years, AI will make humans unnecessary "in almost everything"

That's what the Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist shared in an interview with comedian Jimmy Fallon on NBC's "The Tonight Show" last February.

According to billionaire Bill Gates, in the next decade, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) will make humans no longer necessary "for almost everything" in the world.

According to billionaire Bill Gates, in the next 10 years, AI will make humans no longer necessary "for almost everything".

At the moment, he explained, expertise is still “rare,” referring to the human experts we rely on in many areas, such as “a good doctor” or “a great teacher.” But “with AI, in the next decade, it will be free, it will be ubiquitous—great medical advice, great coaching,” the billionaire said.

In other words, the world is entering a new era that Gates called “free intelligence” in an interview last month with Harvard professor Arthur Brooks, an expert on happiness. The result will be rapid advances in AI-powered technologies that are accessible and impact almost every aspect of our lives, from improving medicine and medical diagnostics to the proliferation of AI tutors and virtual assistants.

“This is profound and even a little scary — because it’s happening so fast and there’s no limit,” Gates told Brooks.

The debate over how humans will fit into an AI-driven future continues. Some experts argue that AI will make humans more productive — rather than replace them — and boost economic growth, creating more jobs.

Still, others, like Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, counter that continued technological advances over the next few years will change the nature of most jobs in nearly every industry, having a “deeply destabilizing” impact on the workforce.

“These tools only temporarily enhance human intelligence. They will make us smarter and more efficient for a while, and they will unlock huge economic growth, but they will fundamentally replace labor,” Suleyman writes in his 2023 book “The Coming Wave.”

AI is both a challenge and a 'great opportunity'

Billionaire Bill Gates is optimistic about the overall benefits that AI can bring to humanity, such as "breakthrough treatments for serious diseases, innovative solutions to climate change, and high-quality education for all."

OpenAI created a model that can achieve a top score on a high school AP Biology exam in months instead of the years predicted by the Microsoft co-founder.

Speaking to Fallon, Gates said that some jobs may never be replaced by AI, like humans probably not wanting to see machines playing baseball. "There will be some things that we keep. But in terms of food production, transportation, growing food, over time, those are the fundamental problems that will be solved," Gates explained.

According to the Microsoft billionaire, the development of AI also comes with "reasonable and legitimate" concerns. For example, the most advanced AI programs today are still full of bugs and can be easily exploited to spread misinformation online.

Still, if he had to start over with a new business, Gates would choose to start an “AI-focused” company, he said in an interview in September 2024. “Today, someone can raise billions of dollars for a new AI company with just a few sketches. I encourage young people at Microsoft, OpenAI, wherever I meet them: ‘Hey, this is the new frontier. ’ Because you’re looking at this problem from a fresh perspective than I am, and that’s your great opportunity,” Gates said.

Mr. Gates saw the AI revolution coming nearly a decade ago. When asked which industry he would focus on if he had to start over, he quickly chose AI.

“The work in artificial intelligence right now is so profound,” Gates said at a 2017 event at Columbia University with Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. He pointed to a “major milestone” when Google’s DeepMind AI lab created a computer program that could beat humans at the board game Go.

At the time, the technology was still far from ChatGPT-style autogenerated text powered by large language models. But by 2023, even Gates was surprised by the pace of AI development. He once challenged OpenAI to create a model that could top a high school AP Biology exam, predicting that the task would take two or three years.

“They did it in just a few months,” the billionaire wrote. He called it “the most significant advancement in technology since the graphical user interface (in 1980).”
