Mr. Hoang Quang Son is 75 years old this year, from Yen Bai province, grew up in Lao Cai province, currently residing in Binh Yen Dong 1 quarter, ward 4, Tan An city, Long An province. Since childhood, he was instilled with the spirit of patriotism and inherited the revolutionary tradition of his family.
In 1967, he joined the army, and in 1969, he crossed Truong Son to support the battlefield in the South. The 3 months and 16 days of walking through the forest and mountains were a period of time he would never forget in his life. The group of 600 people went, but when they arrived, only 450 comrades remained, the rest died along Truong Son due to malaria. He almost had to stay in the sacred forest because of this disease, not to mention the effects of Agent Orange sprayed by the enemy. Despite many difficulties, the soldiers did not waver in spirit, everyone was steadfast and determined for national independence.
Veteran Hoang Quang Son (2nd from left, Ward 4, Tan An City) has made many contributions to help his teammates overcome difficulties.
In the South, Mr. Son participated in many fierce battles that contributed to the Great Victory of Spring 1975. Mr. Son said: “Those days were very difficult, it was war! When we were stationed in Dong Thap Muoi, our clothes were always wet, we had to sleep at night in the water, our heads on water hyacinths, we just wished for a high mound of land to lie down on but there was none”. Despite the difficulties, he did not lose heart, firmly believing in the day of victory.
During the war, he was awarded the Third Class Resistance Medal by the State, the title of Heroic Mechanized Destroyer (he shot down an American M41 tank at the Bu Dop battlefield, Binh Phuoc province),...
After the country was unified , he and his wife became civil servants, and three children were born one after another. Life was sometimes difficult, but he and his wife remained steadfast. When the State decided to establish the Veterans Association, he actively participated in providing material and spiritual support to his comrades; contributed money and working days to repair houses, and encouraged them to strive to improve their lives;...
Every month, he contributes revolving capital to support war veterans in difficulty. He also enthusiastically participates in the work of finding the identities of martyrs and bringing their remains back to their hometowns for burial. Currently, his three children are all party members and have stable jobs.
According to the Chairman of the Association of War Veterans of Tan An City - Tran Van Don, not only Mr. Son but also the war veterans love and support each other in life. They always promote the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers in both wartime and peacetime./.
