TPO - Education in the digital age is struggling with new spaces of “identity struggles” and in this historical situation, teachers are the key factor for “cultural reconciliation”.

This is the opinion shared by experts, scientists, and educators at the 5th International Conference on Culture and Education 2024 - ICCE 2024 with the theme "Intercultural Education in the Context of Integration", on December 7, organized by Hanoi Capital University in collaboration with the University of Education, Hue University and domestic and foreign partners.

Culture and people are endogenous strengths

The workshop focused on promoting national cultural values, at the same time, accepting different cultural identities in the world, towards a global perspective of diversity, interaction, equality and respect between cultures.

Associate Professor Dr. Do Hong Cuong - President of Hanoi Capital University said that in the context of globalization, cultural development and intercultural education is no longer the sole task of any country but a common task of all peoples in the world.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Vice Principal of Hue University of Education, in the common development process of humanity, the interaction between cultures is inevitable. That process has eliminated values that are no longer suitable, at the same time, promoting dialogue and interaction between cultures to create new values, especially in the context of globalization taking place strongly as it is today.

For Vietnam, in the process of opening up and integrating into the world, especially when the country enters the "era of national growth", culture and people are the endogenous strength to develop a prosperous and happy country, and are the ego values to affirm a strong Vietnamese nation standing shoulder to shoulder with friends from all over the world.

“The preservation, maintenance and transmission of the quintessence of national culture on the basis of absorbing the quintessence of human culture, as well as coexistence in respect for the differences of cultures, is not only placed on the shoulders of those working in cultural affairs but also on the shoulders of scientists and educators of universities, especially pedagogical schools,” Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung emphasized.

Promote intercultural education

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Huyen Sam, Hue University of Education, said that in the current trend of globalization, humanity has shifted from confrontation to intercultural dialogue. “Interculturalism has the task of opposing the viewpoint of extreme nationalism and the invasive and brutal possessive attitude of totalitarianism. Cultural dialogue will bring about understanding and harmony between cultures: absorbing the cultural identity of different territories but not losing the unique identity of each region, each country, each ethnic group,” said Ms. Sam.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Huyen Sam, Hue University of Education, said that in the current globalization trend, humanity has shifted from confrontation to intercultural dialogue.

Ms. Sam said that the presentations at the conference acknowledged that the issue of globalization has a profound impact on the field of education. These are also concerns of the education sector in particular and society in general. Culture shock, cultural allergies or rejection of the original culture, these are the realities we face in a multicultural educational environment. Especially, in a flat world of globalization, the biggest challenge is to resist the invasion of totalitarianism and maintain the identity of each cultural subject.

According to Ms. Sam, intercultural education will help students develop skills and knowledge, thereby having an appropriate attitude in the school environment.

From sketching a picture of intercultural education in Southeast Asian countries from the second half of the 19th century to the mid-20th century, experts and researchers proposed teaching and learning measures in each subject such as: foreign languages, literature, history, geography... The authors emphasized that education in the digital age is struggling with new spaces of "identity struggles" and in this historical situation, teachers are the key factor for "cultural reconciliation".

Dr. Nannaphat Saenghong, Chiang Mai University, Thailand, said that promoting intercultural education requires a commitment to teacher preparation policies that not only respect cultural diversity but also challenge systemic inequalities. At the same time, promoting inclusion and respect in the classroom, adapting teaching to the diverse learning needs of learners, and promoting transformative learning.
