Compared to the number of candidates who scored over 1,000 points in the first round last year, this year's number has decreased by nearly half, but the number of exams with scores above average has increased sharply.
TWO DIFFERENT POINTS
Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment (Ho Chi Minh City National University), commented: "The distribution of exam scores for the first round of 2024 is close to the natural standard distribution. The wide range of scores shows the ability to classify candidates, which is favorable for the selection process". Specifically, in 93,828 graded exams, the average score of candidates was 643.4 points, 80 candidates scored over 1,000 points. The candidate with the highest exam score was 1,076 points and the lowest was 203 points.
Compared to the results of the first round last year, this year's exam scores have many surprising fluctuations in different score ranges. Accordingly, although the number of candidates taking the exam is higher, the number of candidates with high scores in the first round this year is much lower than last year.
Candidates taking the first round of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment exam on April 7
At the high score range of over 1,000 points, the number of exams this year has decreased by nearly half compared to the first round last year (last year there were 152 exams while this year there were only 80). The exam with the highest score is also lower than last year. The scores below 1,000 points, the number of candidates achieved this year is also lower than last year. Specifically, in the first round of 2023, there were 1,852 candidates with 901 points or more (accounting for 2.1% of the total number of candidates taking the exam). However, the number of exams with 901 points or more in the first round this year was only 1,435 (over 400 lower).
This trend continues in the range of 801 and above when comparing the two years. In the first round this year, the total number of candidates with 801 and above was 8,550, over 200 less than last year.
But from the 700-point mark, the trend began to change as the number of candidates achieving this year was much higher than last year. Specifically, in the first round this year, over 28,200 candidates scored 701 points or more, 2,400 more than last year (in the first round last year, 25,800 candidates scored this level or more).
The number of exams achieving above average scores (601 points or more) also increased compared to last year. Specifically, in the first round this year, there were over 59,000 exams achieving above average scores (nearly 63%), while in the first round last year, there were only over 52,500 people (59.6%). Compared to previous years, this year the percentage of candidates achieving above average scores remains high over the past 4 years: in 2022, there were 49,800 exams achieving this score (62.7%) and in 2021, it was 75.4%.
Because there are two opposite trends in the two score ranges, the average score of this year's TS remains relatively stable compared to previous years. Specifically, the average score of the first batch of TS this year is 643.4 points, not much higher than last year's level (639.2 points). This average score is also not too different from the previous two years when it reached 646.1 in 2022 and 688 in 2021.
IS IT ABOUT THE EXAM QUALITY OR THE QUALITY OF THE CANDIDATES ?
Evaluating this year's exam results, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh said that the analysis results showed that the difficulty of the first round of the 2024 exam was consistent with the difficulty level according to the exam structure design. Most of the exam questions had good and very good discrimination. This helps classify candidates and the exam results are suitable for admission purposes. "Comparing the score distribution of the first round of this year with last year, it can be seen that there is no statistical difference in the exam scores," Dr. Chinh affirmed.
According to experts, the change in the number of candidates achieving scores in each segment will have impacts on the admission and benchmark scores of schools in the coming time.
According to an examination expert with in-depth knowledge of this exam, to find the real cause of the change in the exam score trend, especially the decrease in the number of candidates in the high segment, it is necessary to compare the results of the competency assessment exam with another scale, for example the results of the high school graduation exam. From there, it is possible to conclude whether the cause comes from the general competency level of students this year. However, according to this examination expert, this year's score distribution compared to the exam criteria has no difference and the difficulty level according to the exam bank is still standard.
The head of the training department of a public university in Ho Chi Minh City said that the large adjustment in the rate of students achieving average or higher scores could come from many different reasons: the difficulty of the exam, the ability of the candidates, the popularity of an exam over time, etc. In general, the exam results did not have much difference in the average scores achieved by the students. However, the change in the number of students achieving in each segment has impacts on the admission and benchmark scores of schools in the coming time.
In which cases should and should not take the second exam?
After receiving the results of the aptitude test, many candidates planned to take the second round of the test on June 2 to improve their scores and increase their competitiveness in their favorite aspirations.
According to Master Bui Van Cong, an online competency assessment test preparation teacher in Ho Chi Minh City, before "finalizing" the second round of competency assessment tests, candidates need to clearly determine which exam results will be used for admission to schools, such as competency assessment or high school graduation. Because each exam has its own requirements regarding difficulty, number of subjects, exam time..., and it will not be effective if candidates study for two different exams at the same time, instead of focusing highly on one exam.
At the same time, Mr. Cong said that students with results 50 points or more higher than the 2023 benchmark will be relatively safe. If they are only at the same level, students can consider taking the second round of exams to increase their competitiveness. "In the case of being 100 points or more lower, it will be very difficult for students to break through and they should focus on the high school graduation exam. This is similar to those who score below 700 points," Master Cong noted.
According to Mr. Cong, the fiercest competition is in the 701 - 800 score range, because this is the score that most schools use to consider admission to many majors and candidates who score above 900 have a high chance of getting into their favorite major.
