"Using your teeth as tools can cause chipping, cracking, or even breaking of teeth, leading to painful dental problems and expensive repairs," warns Dr Rizwan Mahmood, dentist and co-founder of luxury dental clinics Ruh Dental in the UK.

“Teeth grinding, whether due to stress or an unconscious habit, can wear down tooth enamel, cause tooth sensitivity, and even lead to jaw pain,” says Dr. Mahmood. If you find yourself grinding your teeth during the day, try stress-reduction techniques like deep breathing. Try these teeth whitening tips
Social media, especially TikTok, is awash with teeth-whitening tips, but it's best to proceed with caution and consult a medical professional first. "I understand that everyone wants a brighter smile, but home remedies like lemon juice, baking soda, or hydrogen peroxide can do more harm than good," says Dr. Mahmood. These can erode tooth enamel and make teeth more sensitive. To whiten your teeth safely and effectively, talk to your dentist about professional treatments or approved whitening products.
Buy teeth whitening products of unknown origin
Similarly, make sure any dental products you buy online are properly regulated. “Although ordering at-home teeth whitening kits online may seem easier and quicker, they can be harmful to your teeth, as they can contain dangerous levels of hydrogen peroxide, which can cause significant damage to protective tooth enamel,” says Nyree Whitley, clinical director at My Dentist (UK).

“Brushing too hard (or with a hard-bristled toothbrush) can wear down tooth enamel and irritate gums, leading to sensitivity and receding gums,” warns Dr. Mahmood. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, brush gently in circular motions, and let the toothpaste do its thing.
Brush your teeth right after breakfast
Wait an hour after breakfast before brushing. “While breakfast may override brushing in our morning routines, it’s better to brush before eating to protect your teeth. After eating, your teeth need some time to remineralize,” explains Whitley. This is especially true if you consume highly acidic foods or drinks, like orange juice or jam. If you brush less than an hour after eating, you run a higher risk of enamel erosion.
Smoking is bad for your oral health.
Smoking and nicotine products can damage your teeth and gums. “In some cases, smoking can lead to gum disease and oral cancer because the way smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the blood, which affects the mouth’s ability to heal itself,” says Whitley. More common side effects of nicotine products include gum irritation, receding gums, yellowing teeth, and ulcers.
