Thai durian exported to China continues to be tested for yellow O, forcing the country to urgently improve quality and strengthen policies to maintain the market.
According to the Thai Ministry of Commerce, the country will export 859,183 tons of durian to China in 2024, worth nearly 3.8 billion USD, down 13% in volume and 9% in value compared to 2023.
This contrasts with China's durian imports, which are expected to increase by 4.1% in value and 9.4% in volume to 15.6 million tonnes in 2024. Thai durian currently accounts for 57% of the market share in China.
Meanwhile, last year, Vietnam's durian exports to China increased by 38% to 3 billion USD, and its market share also increased from 33% to 41.5%, putting pressure on Thailand to adapt.
Recently, Thai durian has had uneven quality, due to rapid expansion of planting area and extremely hot weather, reducing output.
In particular, since the beginning of this year, China has ordered an investigation into yellow O (alkaline yellow) - a compound that is potentially carcinogenic - causing Thai exports to stagnate and products to be rejected. According to The Nation (Thailand), China refused to import 64 tons of Thai durian due to the discovery of BY2 (Basic Yellow 2) dye, causing the government to tighten export controls.
