In general, the live hog market on April 1 showed a local downward trend in many northern provinces and a slight downward adjustment in some localities in the central and southern regions. Meanwhile, many other regions maintained stable prices.
Pig prices are down, why is purchasing power still gloomy?
Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice Chairman of the Dong Nai Province Livestock Association, said that the recent decrease in live pig prices was due to many reasons. After a long period of high live pig prices, farmers have stepped up herd restoration. The total number of pigs in the country as of the end of February 2025 is estimated at 26,802.2 thousand, an increase of 3.2% compared to the same period in 2024.
In addition, Vietnam spent nearly VND10,000 billion importing meat in just one month. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in February 2025, livestock product imports reached more than 373 million USD, bringing the total value of meat imports in the first 2 months of this year to more than 734 million USD, up 50.3% over the same period in 2024. The average import price of pork to Vietnam is at 2,672 USD/ton.
“Although domestic pork prices have been continuously decreasing, the gap with other countries in the region is still quite large. This gap may lead to more imported pork. Currently, the price of live pigs in Cambodia is about 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg lower than in Vietnam,” Mr. Doan added.
Although the price of live pigs has decreased, the price of meat at traditional markets remains high, causing purchasing power to show no signs of improvement.
The drop in live pig prices and weak purchasing power have made the market gloomy, while the cost of raising livestock, especially the sky-high price of breeding animals, has caused difficulties for small-scale farmers, who may have to sell at a loss if this situation continues, according to VOV newspaper.
