On February 28, information from the Central Endocrinology Hospital said that recently, doctors at this unit received and treated a patient with a leech in his throat.
Accordingly, patient BVD, 53 years old, (Tien Xuan commune, Thach That district, Hanoi) came to the hospital with a hoarse voice and a sore throat. According to the patient, a month before, the patient went to trap mice and cut his hand, so he picked a handful of grass to chew on to cover the cut.
When he got home, the patient felt a lump in his throat, a sore throat, a feeling of an animal wiggling in his throat, and when he looked in the mirror, he saw a part of a black-brown object moving, accompanied by symptoms of hoarseness and sometimes loss of voice.

According to this man, he did not have difficulty breathing, no fever, no nausea, and sometimes coughed up a little blood mixed with saliva. Worried about his health, he went to the hospital for a check-up.
MSc. Dr. Ha Manh Hung - Deputy Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Dentistry - Ophthalmology, Central Endocrinology Hospital said that this is a rare case of a living foreign body in the airway. After performing an ENT endoscopy, a "living foreign body" was discovered in the larynx. When using a light to examine, the foreign body was firmly attached to the subglottis near the trachea.
"After consulting with the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department, if we perform anesthesia to remove the living foreign object, it will cause the patient to struggle and have difficulty breathing, making it difficult to remove the foreign object, and there is even a possibility that the foreign object will go deeper inside, so we decided to perform anesthesia on the patient," said Dr. Hung.
After being admitted to the hospital, the doctors anesthetized him and successfully performed a procedure to remove the living foreign object. The foreign object was a live leech about 6cm in size. The patient is now conscious, healthy, and living normally and has been discharged from the hospital.
According to doctors, patients with leeches living in their bodies often live in mountainous areas, rural areas or use water from streams and ditches. When leeches first enter the body through the water in the nose and throat, they are usually very small in size, but after a short time in the body, they will suck blood and grow very quickly.
Therefore, doctors recommend that people should not use unsafe water sources, leaves, and wild vegetables from streams and ditches for drinking or daily activities, to prevent foreign objects from entering the body.
When there are any unusual health symptoms, people need to go to a medical facility early for a proper diagnosis, to avoid the risk of foreign parasites in the body affecting health.
