Her husband died 8 years ago due to a serious illness, leaving Ms. Le Thi Huynh, 50 years old in Tram Ly village, Hai Quy commune, to raise 2 young children and an old, blind mother. To earn money to support her family, despite her poor health, Ms. Huynh still travels around the countryside every day on her old bicycle to collect scrap. However, life for her and her children is still very difficult, and the family is currently near-poor.
Life is so difficult, but she is still determined to send her children to school with the hope of a brighter future. Up to now, her two sons, Doan Dang Viet, are studying in grade 11A at Nguyen Hue High School, Quang Tri town, and Doan Dang Lao, grade 8B, Hai Quy Primary and Secondary School. Ms. Huynh's two sons are both obedient, good at studying and know how to help their mother with housework. To "support" the two Vietnamese and Lao brothers to nurture their dream of studying, from 2020 up to now, Hai Quy Commune Youth Union has included the children in the program "Foster Children of the Union" to call for help.
Through connecting with kind-hearted people, up to now, the two Vietnamese and Lao brothers have received an average of 500,000 VND per month to cover their study expenses. “With the care and support of the “Foster Children of the Union” program, I have more money to buy clothes and books for my children to study, so it is less difficult. I am truly grateful for that practical help and always encourage my children to try hard to study and excel,” Ms. Huynh emotionally shared.
Secretary of Hai Quy Commune Youth Union Vo Thi Ngoc Diep said that with mobilized funds, up to now the Commune Youth Union and the village Youth Unions have joined hands to implement the model "Foster Children of the Union", helping 20 students with especially difficult circumstances, orphans, and those with relatives suffering from serious illnesses with an average support level of 200,000-500,000 VND/child/month.
“Through the survey, from 2020 to now, the Commune Union has selected the most difficult circumstances to call for and mobilize resources to help them. Although the material support is not much, it has partly helped the children have more support and motivation to strive to study well and achieve good results. We also regularly visit and encourage them to add spirit to help them overcome difficulties,” said Ms. Diep.
Also a unit that has successfully implemented the "Foster Children of the Union" Program, up to now, Hai Duong Commune Union and the village Youth Union branches have regularly sponsored 12 students from kindergarten to grade 9. The support level of the branches is from 100,000-200,000 VND/child/month; of the Commune Union is from 300,000-500,000 VND/child/month.
Hai Duong Commune Youth Union Secretary Vo Thanh Duoc said that in order to have funding, in addition to calling for and mobilizing from other resources, members of the Youth Union branches regularly organize fundraising activities in the locality such as: washing cars, dredging canals, collecting pesticide shells, destroying mimosa trees, golden apple snails...
Tran Thi Hong Tuoi, class 8B, Hai Duong Secondary School, has a rather difficult situation. Her family is poor, her mother is paralyzed and bedridden, her father has to stay home to take care of her, so he can only work a few fields. After Tuoi, there are 2 younger siblings, so her family's life is extremely difficult. "I hope the "Foster Children of the Union" program will continue to care for and help me so that I can go to school. I will try to study hard to not let down the cadres and union members who have taken care of me," Tuoi shared.
Hai Lang District Youth Union directs 100% of the Youth Union - Youth Union of communes and towns to undertake regular sponsorship, giving gifts and scholarships to disadvantaged children in the locality. Grassroots youth organizations connect, mobilize resources, call on benefactors to sponsor and support at least 2 disadvantaged students monthly for 2-3 years.
In the early days of implementing the model, in addition to organizing and mobilizing resources, the District Youth Union officials themselves spent their own money to help the first cases. With enthusiasm and responsible joint efforts, up to now, Hai Lang District Youth Union chapters at all levels have sponsored more than 60 children in difficult circumstances, periodically giving monthly or quarterly grants. The funding source to support the children mainly comes from social mobilization, car washing to raise funds, a few units selling souvenirs, selling trees to raise funds...
Deputy Secretary of Hai Lang District Youth Union Le Quy Tri said: "The foster child of the Youth Union" is one of the key models that Hai Lang District Youth Union focuses on implementing and maintaining effectively every year. This is an activity with profound humanitarian significance, promptly encouraging teenagers and children, especially students with difficult circumstances.
